Hey all, I’ve been digging around the interwebs trying to decide what I should do to prevent catastrophic CP4 failure. Ive done some research and come across the conclusion that the S&S Gen 2 is the best disaster kit, but I’ve also found the Exergy MPROP with 20 micron screen…
Just being a paranoid owner. Is one better than the other? Or should I invest in something else with a filter and sight glass? I’m religious on where I fill up and only run stanadyne, I’m lost on what to do and can’t find any real reviews on the Exergy valve. Thanks sorry for the long winded post. The truck is a 2015 F250 with 101k miles.

I have done nothing to my 15 F250 as far as fuel system goes. I have been coast to coast twice towing our 5th wheel and fueled up all over the place and have 0 issues with my fuel system. I replace my filters when the truck tells me to. I just don't want to open up the fuel system for something that really doesn't prevent a disaster. I have 75,000 miles and still fine.
I only use cetain from Ford. and I don 't always put it in the tank just when I think of it. The book says you don't need to add anything to the fuel. I would just save your money and just drive the truck.

It routes the fuel back to the tank first vs just sending shrapnel directly to the engine...The kit actually does quite a lot to preventing total disaster... It reduces and limits the damage from the cp4 injecting metal debris in the trucks ENTIRE system directly and does a great job at limiting/reducing the metal fragments to the pump, tank and fuel lines vs hitting the engine before being filtered.... I'd say from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE the kits help the owners who experience it alot...

Fords book says a lot about alot yet real world owners have personal expereince and prooven it to be reliable... Fords book once tols 6.0ls owners to flush the coolant system after replacing the egr/oil cooler and to use oem tty headstuds vs arp studs and flushing the system BEFORE replacing the coolers. Ford also said to change the oil as way to high a mile interval on numerous trucks and owners found through testing and spending money on failed parts related to extended change intervals. Becareful what you read because manufactures are not the end all be all.

I do understand what you're getting at though. Manufactures got a lot right but there are still real world testing that has helped make this and keep this forum a knowledgeable sharing library for powerstroke owners.

either kit is worth the money. The cp4.2 in your 2015 is a LITTLE BETTER but still relies on fuel to lubricate a metal on metal surface. Either kit and running a fuel additive will greatly increase the cp4 life. Its not a SUPER COMMON issue but one that warrants the SMALL cost of the cp4 kit and regular fuel additive are still by far way cheaper than the system replacement cost without the kit....

will the Exergy valve protect my system enough to not worry?
because even if I got a dpk kit and experienced a failure I would still have to flush the lines and the tank correct? But I hear that if the dpk gets clogged it’ll still send shrapnel through the injectors?

I have not used the Exergy MPROP yet so I cant comment. However even if a failure occurred with that device yes you still have to flush the tank/lines. The whole cp4 re-route/disaster kits job is to just keep the fuel from going directly from the pump to the engine through the lines so instead it re-routes the fuel back to the tank to become filtered again. Neither is 100% protection but it reduces the affected areas BY A LOT to save you money.

Personally the disater kit and regular fuel additive use from Diesel Kleen, Howes or Opti lube has been what many do with great success. There will always be those who saw failures and didn't when not using anything but the cost of a small additive and kit was pennies compared to the failure.

Do they restrict flow at all for the bypass kits? I’ve seen threads where guys trucks won’t start after?
and the Exergy valve won’t protect as good as a bypass kit then? I’m just thinking on what’s going to save injectors

Something I see missed by a lot of people... Just because you stop the metal doesn't mean your fuel system is saved. If your pump failed because of contaminated fuel (water, gas, def) your injectors still wont be saved. Yes, they may survive a bit longer... But, its gonna be a REALLY bad day if one of those 8 injectors hangs open and torches your motor.

Yes the metal is bad, but the outcome for the vast majority of people will still be the same. A tech is still going to inspect for signs of contamination, and if its found the kit didn't really save you anything. The only real answer is... Wait for it............... Quality clean, water free diesel...

I posted this as I would do any work myself-
I use hot shots EDT - and winter version in every tank, now I’m still undecided, any shop I’ve talked to usually recommends the bypass kit, but the truck in question I’m planning on putting in a BW drop in turbo, s369. So I don’t know if it’s worth getting the gen 2 kit , they use a filter on the one side and most shops seem to push for that. Don’t know if they’re just trying to sell product or not. - in Canada these kits are almost 600$ And the exergy valve is 340$
