So I buttoned up the engine and radiator filled it with tap water (it's going to get drained out anyway after the flushes) and took it for a test drive. I'll be DAMMED! My temperatures prior were approaching 10 degrees, but are back down to 3-4 degrees (of course it's with just water no antifreeze) and are back to instantly recovering and I haven't even flushed with Restore yet! I have to drain the water that's in there, then I will fill it with Restore and tap water. I have to wait until my little guy gets home from school otherwise the Restore will be in there too long. There is really something to this reverse flushing, take note everyone with what Juzatheman and others are doing and when you flush you MUST include the oil cooler reverse flush into the process!

So now the restore flush is completed. I did not find the "fish flakes" that others have, but the end product was a milky solution. Drained the radiator and drivers block plug, ran water in the degas bottle and leaving the rest til the morning when it will get the reverse oil cooler flush then VC-9 treatment.

Well, it's all done now the end result with the ELC coolant my temperatures are 7 degrees at 70mph 80 degrees out so it's about where it was when I replaced it last year. Great idea to reverse flush the oil cooler and it really isn't hard to do. Those of you who have coolant flush procedures written up, you may want to add in an optional reverse flush the oil cooler part.

yeah, I cut my oil cooler part this weekend. Guess what I found?

silicate goo in the small coolant passages. I was really expecting to find fish flakes in the cooler but to my suprise was the silicate build up. I guess that will happen when you run the Gold for 90k with no maintaince or flush.

just glad I caught with the edge and was able to deal with it before some bad stuff happened.

Wow 43 pages of some very good info. A few pages back I read that Jugernaut was going to send the "silicate gel" being found to a lab to either confirm or disprove it was silicate. Did this ever happen and I missed it? What was that outcome?
Thanks,
Joe

Nylyon, what kind of a rig did you setup to reverse flush the oil cooler? I read here or another thread about using a pressurized paint bucket... seems like the best way would be to hook up a rig off of a garden hose... has anybody removed the fuel/oil filter tower so that the gunk is flushed out of the coolant entry port of the oil cooler rather than flushing it back into the waterpump etc?

I went to the local hardware store and bought 3/4" O.D. clear plastic host and fittings to hook it up to a garden hose. The 3/4" fits very snugly in the cooler opening. I removed block plug and lower radiator hose and flushed for 30 minutes each time.

Do you have any pics? You know they say a picture is worth a thousand words... I wonder how many posts that would be worth! :D

I will get some together today. I had even thought about making a kit and selling to make a couple extra bucks, but honestly it's inexpensive to build.

I went to my local hardware store "Palmer Brothers". Please frequent your independent hardware store before the big box stores! Bought a 3/4" hose and with the assistance of the helpful employees at Palmer bought the necessary hardware to connect the host to a garden hose.

It's a combination of brass and plastic adapters.

For photo purposes, here's the oil cooler and hose:

You remove the cap where the orange hose is. This is the hose which goes from the oil cooler coolant outlet to your EGR cooler (if so equipped)

Insert hose into oil cooler coolant outlet (it's a perfect fit) and turn on the faucet.

When I did this I used an RV style in-line water filter to minimize any solids from entering the cooling system. I found no harm in flushing the system completely with pressurized tap water then replacing that water with distilled. If you have a way to pressurize a couple hundred gallons of distilled water, that would be the better option.

It would also be better if you were able to connect your hose to the HOT water supply from your home. Using hot water has to be a little better than cold, but I don't have access to hot faucet outdoors. You should also make adapters for your heater lines to reverse flush them as well (no pictures).

I highly recommend adding this process to your flushing routine. There are others who pressurize chemicals in a 5gal bucket, and reverse flush with chemicals. Use your imagination, the goal is to remove ALL contaminates from your system.

O.K. I've been following this thread and the ideas that have surfaced (necessity being the mother of invention) are great. I've read the numerous threads regarding the flushing process. I'm getting ready to flush my 39,000 mile 6.0, I have been running a coolant filter on it. Is it absolutely necessary to run the VC9, is that the chemical that prevents rust and scale? Is there one agreed upon flushing procedure? I like the reverse flush, but should that be done before or after the chemical process?

And, do I run the risk of clogging my oil cooler by flushing and chemically treating? Or do I let sleeping dogs lie?

Thanks in advance, Dave

It is my opinion (and worth exactly what you paid) is that you need to clean your cooling system as best as you can. When I did the switch to ELC, I reverse flushed the oil cooler after each chemical flush. Why? I wanted to be sure that *if* there were any particles which got dislodged I would be able to remove them from the oil cooler right quick. Keep in mind that I had thoroughly flushed just last year but without Restore. When I flushed using restore / VC9, my ECT / EOT were the same as when I replaced my oil cooler for the second time. I am calling that flush a success. The only thing that worried me about clogging up the oil cooler was explaining to my wife why I would have to replace it for a 3rd time.

Yes Jack it is, and your analysis of my oil cooler is the most referenced oil cooler post there is. You've changed oil cooler history!

Well, I think that reverse flushing the oil cooler helps flush the oil cooler. Leaving the thermostat in circulate the coolant in the engine and not the radiator as much.

After your flushing are you putting in antifreeze or just water?

i always put 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.

i woulnd't never run/use the engine with plain water!

but this time after the "quick flush" (didn't remove the block drain plugs)
only lower radiator hose and backflush the cooler, filtered the coolant and put it back cause i did this in my lunch time at work, so i didn't have much time....

anyway first time i have -3 delta on my way home, so the oil temp was lower than my coolant...
normaly in that 15 mile run between home and work,
at the end oil is hotter than coolant but now two times it has been lower.

and this time catch was: two tea spoon of rust in my magnet trap in the lower radiator hose.
so not a worthless thing. maby should get a patent for that
