New Preload (torque) Recommendations for 6.0 ARP studs

All of the newest 6.0 stud kits #250-420 come with a new lubrication for install called the Ultra Torque, when using this new lube, the Preload (Torque) Recommendations for the 6.0 Powerstroke has changed, it was 245lb ft with the old supplied lube, but with the new Ultra Torque that they provide us, they have dropped the Preload to 210lb ft.

Here is a copy of the new directions

Also here is a presentation that Chris from ARP showed us a couple weeks ago. I will post up the other part where they actually used the 6.0 stud for testing later on.

NOTE: Nothing has changed with the actual studs at all the material is still the same, if you have a new set of studs with the old directions, you can purchase the new Ultra Torque from ARP and follow the new directions if you wish. The good thing about the new suggested preload is that the stud doesn't get as close to its yield strength.

So are all of use with the old lube in are trucks in trouble?

I think it is basically just an upgrade...different type lube so it is going to have different torque specs...

You know how things work...always something bigger and better...lol

Probably makes torquing a heck of a lot easier... 210 ft/lbs is a bit easier to swallow than 245 ft/lbs--especially if there is no re-torquing sequence necessary, me thinks...

heres a question, When im in there doing injectors, would it hurt to loosin the studs and re-torque them all with this new lube and specs? As much as it may not be necessary at all, i dont want to mess around with HGs again and if the claims are true in the ad for a better/consistant torque, im all for it! My only concern, would it be more harmful to the HGs now by possibly disturbing the "seat" when re-torquing..

Just a more strait question, say if you pull all the studs, and didnt pull the heads, do you need to replace the HGs.. Just to clarify, I wouldnt consider doing all the work just to re-torque to studs, but while im in there anyways, would it be worth it??

Removing the head means replacing the gasket. No way of reusing them.

Personally, I wouldn't disturb the gaskets that are there. If they fail, then replace them and use the new stuff. Very very few people that have studs have any further problems with head gaskets, and they all used the old lube..

little off topic but can anyone explain exactly what the torque sequence is for arp headstuds

question, I've done all my own work and rebuilt some car engines but this is my first diesel. My current truck, 2005 king ranch with the 6.0 and 154k miles. So far it's running great but I'd like to bulletproof it some. Would it be possible to change the stock bolts to the arp bolts without disturbing the heads and head gaskets? I know there's a torque sequence but just curious if it could be done since my heads and head gaskets seem to be in good shape.

If you have a stock truck with 154K miles, then there is no way in heck that your head gaskets are in good shape. In order to replace just studs you are tearing everything down already and accomplishing the most difficult part of this task. It would be absolutely foolish to not replace the gaskets at the same time. Thats just my two cents...

To actually answer the question you asked, it is not possible to replace the bolts with studs without disturbing the gaskets... That is if you plan on leaving the cab on. The heads MUST come out in order for the studs to fit in, WITH the cab on. If you plan on removing your cab to do this task, then you are still relieving stress on the gaskets, then re-stressing them. I would assume this would "disturb" them.

Do it once, and do it right... and get another 154K out of your truck. Just make sure you replace/fix the other issues first...you know... the ones that fail the HG's in the first place... coolant, EGR cooler, Oil cooler. Then while you are in there spend the $50 on the new HPOP fitting, get the upgraded fuel pressure regulator spring, and might as well get a coolant filtration kit. Then you have bullet proofed your 6.0L.

What is the latest craze with everyone wanting to do the ol' 1 for 1 swap? Am I the only one who finds it fun to tear these engines down (and see just how much my buddies have lied to me about not abusing their trucks)?

Glad I stumbled accross this thread. I've read many of the ones where guy's have replaced head gaskets and installed ARP studs and torqued them to 245ft lbs. My studs came and say 210ft lbs. I was a little confused and somewhat worried until I read this thread. Whew!!!!! Thought I'd missed something somewhere LOL......The ORG to thr rescue one more time....

never mind i reread the first post good deal

From what I've read you may want to order extra Ultra Torque. Most say you need more than the packet supplied. I ordered a bottle from Summit Racing yesterday $23 shipped.

If it came with 2 packets t ghost st is plenty. Just get a small brush to apply it.

Head gaskets

I have an 05 F 450 with 220000 miles on it. I bought it in 06 with 0K miles on it so, I put all but the first 10 K on it 2 years ago I did the heads and studs. Last summer I was seeing alot of pressure in the rad hoses. I knew what was coming. Back when I did mine, MANY people and shopd were saying not to use the OEM gaskets. Many were using the Black Onyx. I also used them and have to do them again. I let the truck sit since last Oct and will be tearing it down next week. I know of at least 6 other trucks in my area that have or had failures with this gasket. Is everyone here using OEMs or is there something I should know about

The Black Onyx is no longer being produced do to all of the failures.
Yes. As Sarg said OEM is the way to go. Their is some new Black diamond or something like that out by the same company that made the Black Onyx. I have herd good things about them BUT non of the mechanics I know will touch any head gaskets that are black now.
