Recently, on my 2003 7.3, I was getting a wrong readong from my fuel gauge and managed to stall it out of fuel. Fuel pump is working, added 911 diesel additive and cleaned the fuel bowl and replaced the fuel filter. Now when trying to start, fuel bowl isn't filling. I can feel and hear the pump working (replaced it 3 years ago) but nothing getting into the bowl. HELP!!

How much fuel is in the tank? -- if the pickup foot is broken, then you need more than 1/4 tank full
Have you checked the large oring on the fuel pump(HFCM) filter? -- need to be sure it is not twisted, and apply some grease to the oring, so it turns in easier
the filter cap has a limit stop on the threads(if someone has not broken it) and should bump the end when it is tight

You could remove the line going to the tank and add a clear hose into a clean container of fuel, that would bypass the tank
Bypassing the tank would let you know if the pump will work

Leave the filter out to see if the pump is working, it's on the pressure side

I believe there is a small screen in the pump inlet -- not sure if you can clean in out tho
pop the pump inlet line off and see what is inside
would be good to add an inline filter if there is junk coming from the tank
D139225 is a inline screen filter 3/8 hose fittings, made to use on a fuel pump inlet -- you can find this at a Case IH dealer

The fuel pump can lose its pumping ability and still run and make the noise you normally hear. I had it happen to mine. You can also test the pump buy removing the suction/rear line and attach clear tubing to the pump and see if it pulls fuel out of a fuel jug. Rock Auto has the best price on the Bosch pump and its a simple swap, remove and install no extra line or fittings needed.

3/8 id
yes, you need pressure -- filling the bowl will make no difference

Its either 5/16" ID or 3/8" ID clear tubing, remove the OEM fuel line w/ the disconnect tool and check. I did a post over on TDS years ago with pictures of the Bosch fuel pump pulled apart to see how it was made. When you replaced the pump years ago did you use a Bosch ??

Found this pic from 2013 :) -- Looks like the screen is not easily cleaned
The D139225 that I mentioned in post 13 would be a good addition, especially if the in-tank fiters have been removed

There you have it, good find. That's my picture from way back. That screen (which isn't serviceable) sits against the bottom of the case and is the first thing the fuel entering goes thru and mine as you can see was clean. The fuel filters in the tank are what gets dirty and prevent anything from reaching the fuel pump. But anyways those pieces came out in the order that they are laying there, the actual pump is what is attached to the armature piece and sits right on top of the screen and the top section sits in there and holds the brushes and supports the whole motor and the it's top of case is crimped to hold it all in place.

Well this post must have JINXED me.
Last Friday less than a mile from home my truck starts running real ruff. I babied it home to the driveway and figured it was my low fuel situation, as i was trying to see how far i could drive once the fuel light comes on. So i added 5 gallons to it and it didnt help, so i drain the fuel bowl and the pump wouldn't refill it, but I can hear the pump running, so i removed the line off the back of the pump installed a 5/16" line from a fuel jug and it wouldn't draw fuel back into the pump. So off to Southwest Diesel i went to get a new pump (sells them for$89 on Amazon), so got a new pump and swapped it out and all is good again. BUT the good news is BOSCH has a LIFETIME WARRANTY on their fuel pumps so I got a free replacement sent to me from RockAuto who I purchased the prior one from back in 2012. So a FYI for anyone who has one go bad.
