Front hub lockout broken/stuck

So, I bought this truck recently as a project. The 4 wheel was not working and I discovered the manual lockout was not working.

when I pulled the lockout to replace it, the assembly came apart leaving the innermost gear stuck in the hub. When I say stuck, I mean stuck. Heat, homemade puller, cold chisel, everything short of dynamite has been tried.

my question is, can the hub and axle be pulled as one piece (can’t get to the snap ring due to the aforementioned stuck gear)?

This is the passenger side on a 2005 F350 SRW.

EDIT: Misunderstood the question -- yes the hub and axle can be pulled together
Short answer : No
the axle joint will hold you up

This thing rusted up ?

Don't look rusted
if you pry on the axle joint will it move in and out ?
is that shifter in the pic piece frozen on the splines ?

You could pull the whole thing out of the steering knuckle
but the snap ring on the axle still would need to come off to get the axle out of the hub

I believe whoever put the lockouts in did not line up the splines and hammered it in. The gear is not moving. I tried prying the whole assembly at the axle and the hub. My pry bar broke. Before I used a come along or something with more force, I wanted to make sure there was nothing else that would bind the axle.

The nuclear option would be to pull the knuckle, hub, and axle all as one. The splines on the axle are shot anyway. The knuckle is pretty expensive to replace though….

I'd fill that cavity everywhere with some good penetrating oil 2-3 times a day for a couple days and retry it...

Yeah, no amount of penetrating oil will overcome one that was hammered on to the splines incorrectly...

Keep us in the loop and let us know how it goes.

Take the ABS sensor out ?

Have to pry against the axle and the axle housing to pop the seal out of the knuckle

If you are speaking of the dust seal that goes behind the knuckle on the axle shaft in the housing, they don’t stay in too well. Not really a huge concern, as the original style fell out pretty quickly anyhow.

There is an updated version that stays in pretty well

You will need the OTC tool to install the large seal on the axle shaft -- or it will fail
