Since I am doing a full engine tear down, I decided to pull the trigger on a stg #1 colt cam. Talking with Geoff at colt yesterday I learned a few interesting tidbits about the down falls of oem valvetrain, (his opinion on why its hard on lifters). He also told me that he has one in his truck now and he has stock and tuned dyno numbers from before and will de getting after numbers in the spring at BD dyno days.

He also said that the guys at bernhausen diesel in abbotsford could not believe the drivability and power increase on his truck even on stock tuning. And suggested that 2nd of course to tuning it is one of the best mods you can do. (obviously not cost effective unless you are doing a build). All of this is the opinion of the man selling a product of course, but thought id share, I am excited for this mod.

There was a few other things that he said that he asked me not to post on a public forum. but if your interested pm me

I know that there isn't a lot of "tangible" data on cams and there are some VERY strong opinions on "effectiveness" (lack thereof actually) of a cam, but I am with you. I have yet to read where a guy who put a cam in his truck hated the way it drove after it was back on the road. I definitely won't preach to buy a cam for everyone, but I do believe that there is enough supporting evidence for a mild cam (like the Colt Stage 1) that if you're doing a motor build with new lifters and have to buy a new cam anyways (it is stupid not to do a new cam with new lifters), you might as well buy an aftermarket one like the Colt Stage 1 cam.

Are the Stage 1 cams still a reground cam or are they a billet cam now??

Either way, I'm looking to get a stage 1 cam for my next rebuild.

Regrind, so you need a descent core. He can fix more then some might think.

I bought the stage 2 new billet for mine. Hope to have it running soon. I had the short block together and had to tear it back down because there was too much piston protrusion. In the process of milling .020 off the top of the pistons so I can put it all together. I talked with Geoff quit a few times before I bought the cam. Very knowledgeable guy and a pleasure to deal with. Looking forward to the results of all the work. Couldn't see the point in buying a stock cam when there was a better one available.

I just finished my build with a colts stage one cam along with a bunch of other mods. I would agree that if you are doing a re-build it would be worth doing. I also did valve springs and RCD push rods for some piece of mind. would be interested in any other insight you and on the cam you received. PM me

I don't have a cam but rode in a truck earlier this year that has a colt cam in it.. Was louder when accelerating but the idle was the same as any other 6.0

Check his build thread; he installed one and seems to like it.

I'm in the middle of building my motor right now, I purchased a colt stage 2 cam, hopin to have some results in about two weeks, hopefully !

Gear head 2012 can give u some insight. Very smart guy

I have their stage 2 new billet in mine but due to some valve spring problems have not gotten it running yet. The specs are different from the regrind to the new cam. I had to get new valve springs for mine. Just got all my parts from comp cams last week for the springs. Didn't want to take a butt reaming from RCD on valve springs when I can order stuff cheaper through the shop. Wish I had some good data for you but its going to be a few weeks yet before it's running.

I too have been in search of hard fast data to support an upgraded cam. However though, I don't think anyone has gone through an entire long block build and ONLY swapped out the cam. Nevertheless though, through the countless number of threads/posts that I've read, it seems overwhelmingly true that mild cams improve (at the very least) driveability and streetability of larger turbo setups and that I haven't seen anyone say they regretted putting the cam in their truck. I wish there was more info out there and while I wouldn't do a more build just to install a cam, if I were rebuilding my long block, you can be assured I'll stick a Stage 1 cam in there over a stocker any day.

Nate, in fact the only thing I'm changing on my complete build is the cam and set of hypermax rods. So I feel that that I should be able to notice a diffrece. Should be interesting to see.

Main thing I'm lookin for out of it is a slight power increase and hopefully a decent EGT drop across the board

PMR rods sucks!!

They guy that helped me with my build has another truck in with 200k miles and a bad lifter/cam. So we are going to go ahead and stick the colt stag 1 cam in. His truck is completely stock and the cam will be the only upgrade. He wants to keep it 100% stock so it will be a good before after comparison. The only other upgrades we will be bulletproofing. Should be back running in a month or so, I am helping him pull the engine tonite

My cruising egt's are way down, but I also added bd ex manifolds, and bigger injectors...

Anymore info on how you guys are liking the cam. I am looking to put in a reman long block .30 over with a stg2 cam. Has anyone delt with asheville for a cam? They advertise a stage2, I'm just not sure who's it is. I will most likely get my block from them because they will honor there warranty with performance products. Ive read (not from other builders, but on here) that most will not honor there warranty if performance parts are added.

im running the stage 2 colt cam and love it. EGT drop across the board was what i noticed, and maybe a liitle quicker spool with this s371/82 Im stepping fuel up & steeping up to a s476/87, ill keep ya posted on how it spools this monster

I'm still waiting on my block but should have it "soon", I've been hearing that since the end of June. Anyway I'll be sure to post a review once I get it all put back together.
