Hello everyone,

I have a bone stock 2004 F250 6.0 crew cab Lariat with 31,600 miles. I bought it new. The truck is in excellent condition as I have only used it as an RV with a Lance camper on it. This truck has been trouble free but does not get driven much with the price of Diesel in CA. DMV fees are sky high at over $500 a year and I am debating selling it. KBB.com says it is worth $18-20K. I've kept up with maintenance and it has new tires. If I were to replace it, I would probably buy a F150 when I move to TX in a few years. If I keep it, I would consider stage 2 bullet proofing but the reality is that California is becoming very anti diesel. I no longer have the Lance camper and I am trying to decide to keep or sell, if I keep it to keep stock or have basic bullet proofing done. I much appreciate your input.

Agree with the 30 figure.. may be a bit higher depending on who is looking. Trim level would also come into play a bit.

If you think you might get into camper that would require that kind of towing, then I'd keep it as the cheapest vehicle you'll ever own is the one that's paid for. If you don't think you'll be towing heavy then I'd capitalize on the market before it tanks.. it will eventually. It's already going down.. I just sold my 2010 Escalade and got probably 1-2k less than I would of a month ago.

Bernard and matman, thank you for your responses. I am done with cab over campers. Might want a double axle trailer at some point, but an F150 can handle that. I had no idea that trucks were selling for so much. I'd be very happy to get $30K for it. By the way, it is a FX4 4WD. It has a SCT Vision monitor. Do you guys have any suggestions as to the best places to list it for sale? Bringatrailer? Facebook Marketplace? Craigslist?

Thanks,

Seems California is also anti-small engine… outlawing gas weed eaters and lawnmowers. I had six friends in California as of 2020. They’ve all moved out of CA!

If it were me, I wouldn’t sell that truck nor would I do any bulletproofing other than the EGR cooler. Also, the blue spring fuel pressure regulator. That, a thorough flush/back flush of the cooling system and some other updates/upgrades here and there and just keep driving it. A new F-150 will cost you much more than you might be thinking and just isn’t as capable. We will all understand if you sell but, I think there are more than one of us who regret selling a vehicle that meets or exceeds our needs. Mine is the 2006 Sequoia that I sold in 2016. 🙁☹😞😢😡🤬

I guess I see it a bit differently.

Doing all of the typical reliability improvements can easily cost $15k.

Spending $45k (total) to have a 16 year old 6.0L, even if it has been "bulletproofed" is not going to be appealing to very many folks (so many parts degrade with age - plastic, gaskets, seals, even wiring, etc).

No warranty is one reason of course.
Diminishing parts availability is another.

To my way of thinking, what a person would end up with after a $30k purchase price would end up being too close to a lot of new truck prices, and I love my 6.0l! I gotta believe that many people would feel the same way.

If you decide to keep it, then there are a lot of threads recently on reliability upgrades based on year model.

Be aware that in 04 you could get the 03 engine, or an 04 engine.

What you do to add reliability depends quite a bit on which one you have,

On top of ALL THAT, some shops actually HURT reliability when the do the head studs. MANY, MANY shops do a very poor job of it. Some shops are dishonest, some shops are incompetent for a big job like that, and some shops just don't care about doing a good job. And then some shops just don't have enough trained people, so kids end up doing a lot of your work - more than they should.

There are generally 2 types (OK 3 types) of owners. Those that always want something newer, those that will drive it into the grave, and those that evaluate the relative cost and potential failures (based on usage/condition) versus when to move on. I see both arguments, and they both have merit. If you must have a new vehicle, sell it ASAP and move on. Now after saying that, if it is pristine with no rust, and you still NEED a truck, you would be nuts to move into another vehicle. You can pump an awful amount of fuel into it for the premium of having a new, less capable vehicle.

I bought my 07 used (100k) 11 years ago. I got a great deal on it and it was in great shape. I have doubled the odometer since owning it, but the decay/rust is starting to show if you look closely. It may have another 5-10 years left in it, but any major failures will be the end of it. It owes me nothing, and now I seldom need a truck, so renting one for the few times I need one, may actually be the better/least costly option. Obviously your decision is based on your circumstances, but I am a little surprised at how new your old truck is!

Texas is full of people ....I like my trucks, land, lowish taxes, guns and God. Stay there and keep your limited capacity mags BS, pollution controls, STUPID high taxes.. I like being free, being able to defend myself, not giving 50% to taxes, not having $6.60 fuel...to many liberals moving to Texas and turning it blue....defunding police...WTF is that...a Cali move for sure, taking prayer out of schools wasn't Cali's best move either...now we don't have it in our schools and discipline and direction are lost in public schools here because of it. What is universal basic income...? Is that something to demotivate us and make us lazy....started in Cali....I can go on...but I wont. I've got multiple jobs, pay my way through life, work hard (95 hours+) per week and live a good life, have a few close friends and pay my taxes.

Oh yea, on to your post, keep the truck and move to Arizona.....
