2003 crank won't fire, no ficm sync, needing new things to check...

I have been working on an 03 6.0 cranks won't fire as a side job. I work on these engines/trucks a lot at work (not a Ford dealer, but an independent diesel repair shop). It got towed to me after sitting at another shop for a year; which they hooked a scanner to it and claimed it had a dead cylinder. The truck shut down while driving and hasn't started since. started with checking the usuals, and found low fuel pressure, and no low pressure oil. The owner did inform me that he was driving the truck with a leaking oil cooler (getting oil in coolant.) So I tore down and replaced oil cooler, oil filter stand pipe, hpop screen, and oil filter drain valve (due to being melted) and put a known good fuel pressure pump on the frame. I also installed new cam, and crank sensors, filters, oil, ICP sensor, and pulled the drivers valve cover to install a guage in the oil rail and installed a new ficm (due to owners other 6.0 needing one, he stole this trucks). Now I have low pressure oil, fuel supply pressure (45 psi), and 1500psi high oil pressure at the rail with mechanical guage. But the truck will not fire due to no ficm sync. no smoke out of the pipe, and ficm sync never goes to "yes" on my Snap-On solus edge.

I have checked/cut open the wiring harness to check, and all looks good, I have tripple checked every wire that goes from PCM to ficm, cam sensor to PCM, and crank sensor to PCM. I have stuck a pocket screw driver into the crank tone ring and did not feel any movement, and put a lab scope in the cam sensor hole to see the dowel pin in the camshaft. I have all powers and grounds to the PCM, and ficm. injectors will buzz test with koeo, but will not fire while cranking. Any help would appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If there is no FICM SYNC while cranking the engine, then the problem may be your CMP/CKP. The FICM SYNC circuit relays information from the PCM to the FICM. FICM SYNC occurs through two circuits between the FICM and PCM. Check wiring harness to the CMP and CKP. If one of these two circuits has a short/open, FICM SYNC will not occur.
PCM: If the PCM is not working properly, FICM SYNC may not occur.
FICM: If the FICM is not working properly, FICM SYNC may not occur.
CMP If the CMP signal is erratic, FICM SYNC may not occur.

If you haven't missed something, the sensors are good, the harness is good, the connectors are good, you have fuel, compression, HPO, then either the FICM isn't talking to the PCM or the PCM isn't talking to the FICM. I would suspect that you do not have the proper FICM for that truck.

Do you know if the original was a 4-pin or 7-pin?

Sounds like it has to be a FICM problem to me ... You're 100% on those connectors?

Yes I feel like the terminal pins are tight, and I know the connectors are pushed into the FICM. The truck is still half tore apart, meaning that no fan/shroud, no coolant, no ficm mounts, etc. Just enough that engine will run like u do every time I hpop or headgasket one of these engines at work.

May not be a lot of help, but make sure you have an '03 ficm. I was questioning the ficm on my 03 truck and over the weekend swapped it with an ficm from an early 04 with an 03 style engine, and the truck started and ran just fine but the ignition would not shut it off, turned off the interior but engine kept running with the 04 ficm. Swapped back in my 03 ficm and the key turned the truck off. I figured they would be the same but they obviously were not exactly the same pin out.

Here, I think I know what happened. Customer brought the original FICM to him. He plugged it in and like magic it worked. Guy had his problem solved and as such didn't care to come back on here and shed some light on the issue. Thanking everyone for there help and wrapping this thread up so that the next time this happened to someone else it could easily be found via "search". That wasn't on his mind and is a very common theme here. I love when I find a thread describing exactly my problem only to read 10 pages that leads you to a dark hole with no light and no way to get out.

Am I the only one that thinks it's odd that there is actually a pellet stove forum to moderate? Don't get me wrong, that's great, but being from Florida is also kinda crazy. :thumb:

Many in Europe are now getting their heat from pellet stoves and generation plants are converting to wood pellets as well burning the wood pellet products made here in the USA.
Oh and it was snowing here on and off most of the day :(

I have through basic no starts, my issue was loss of ficm sync a few minutes into driving before it even warmed up with no chance of restart until next day. I would start it to move it for street sweeping and then one day it never starts again. Due to ficm sync. Check out my latest forum, if you can shed some light on the topic, it'll be much appreciated!
