So drawing some inspiration from Colin7.3's build, which is awesome, I decided I would do something similar and document my build in here. Now bare with me because it may be a little slow. I am working as an EMT and going to college so time and money is few and far between.

A little History! I bought this 2001 4x4 7.3 F-350 the other day with 267K miles on it for 2K. Its in OK shape and the owner said that the engine had been recently overhauled but it wouldn't start and he wasn't sure why.

So we got it home and off the trailer which was a bit of a challenge in itself. Today we, me and a friend of mine who is even crazier than me, started looking over it and finally figured out it wasn't getting oil up to the HPOP. The guy that put the engine back together had used silicone, and way too much silicone, to seal the oil pump and it ended up blocking the oil. So after a fairly easy fix the truck is now running! Think i got a pretty good deal after such an easy fix!
So you may be wondering, what is so crazy about this build? And the answer to that is i'm taking the 7.3 engine and the 6 speed transmission out of the 01 truck and putting it in my old F-350, that i have been using since i was 13, and currently has the old 351w in it!

Then taking the body and chassis of the 01 and putting a 5.9 cummins engine and transmission in it, which i just got yesterday! So i will have a 01 7.3 in my 1994 350 and a cummins in my 01 350! First up though is getting the 351w out of my 94 and the 7.3 in its place, the cummins comes after.
I'm hoping to get my 94 350 looking like my brothers 01 350 it has so much work done to it, and looks sick! He gets around 550HP from under there on the dyno.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed and will keep you up with the progress of the build.Hope you enjoy this and feel free to give advice or ask questions! :icon_ford:

This will be a sweet build man. I know the feeling of no time as I'm also an EMT/firefighter plus my college and full time job.

One thing to consider is why not put the Cummins in the 94 truck and leave the 01 in the way it sits and maybe build it up a little. That way you don't need to worry about wiring nightmares with the electrical engine and the like. But dont let me change your mind if you really wanna do the 7.3 in the 94 its your project

Whichever way you choose to go I wish the best and I'll be following this closely

Ah you're a FF! Nice!

There is a reason i'm putting the 7.3 in the 94. It may not be legit for others but it is for me. Also i believe i can get more power from a 7.3 than a 5.9. The cummins build will also be more for a friend than anything. The 94 will be mine!

Also here's proof the truck is idling! This was the first crank up for it while i have owned it!

7.3 start up! - YouTube So exciting just to have it running! lol

So after a few hangups and some other stuff i had to get done i'm finally back to this project.

Quick update. Was able to take the tranny out today and the engine is ready to come out of the 01 truck. The engine runs pretty smooth. Only problem is the engine has a leak. I believe its coming from the back around the turbo so i'm not too worried about it. Hopefully on monday we will be able to get the engine out of it and take a look at things. I'll try to remember to take some pics next time.

If everything looks good (fingerscrossed) on the engine and tranny i'll be taking the 351 out of the 94 next and getting it ready for a bigass 7.3 engine! Still need to check on the piston rods. Really hope they're the steel forged. That's going to be my deciding factor for now on how much hp i'm going to try to get out of it.

Quick update. Got the 01 engine out and am pretty sure the oil lead was coming from the turbo mount. So i have a new one on the way. Also went ahead and got lower end gaskets for the whole thing and put those on. Good news was when i took the oil pan off and saw those beautiful STEEL FORGED rods! Now that I know that my goal in hp is 500-550. I think that should be fairly easily attainable with the 7.3.
Worked on the 351 a bit the other day so hopefully today I can get that engine out of the 94 truck and start looking at what i'm going to have to modify/custom fab for the 7.3 to go in there.

So I got the 351 engine and tranny out of the 94 the other day. Went to a pick n pull and found the core support and engine mounts that I need for the ps to fit into my trucks frame. I found some 3" tubing that's going to work for my intercooler placement as well. Also I got the ps ready to install into the 94. Even placed the ps in the 94 jst to see how it looked room wise and it looked very spacious surprisingly. So hopefully the next time I work on it I can get the engine fitted into the 94 and that will be exciting. Can't wait for that! Been feeling pretty good so far as to my progress. Everything seams to be going fairly smoothly.

The only things that I see in the future that may give me some trouble is going to be fabricating the support for the intercooler, electrical system/comp system change, and fitting the 6 speed tranny in where the old automatic was. Hoping it won't be too bad though.

If all goes well i'm thinking i'm going to start out with this turbo:
Turbochargers - Turbo and Charge Air Upgrades - 1994.5 - 2003 Powerstroke 7.3L Truck - Ford Powerstroke
A MBRP exhaust and an air intake of some kind. Haven't really decided on buying the air intake system or just building it myself. Prolly just going to build my own to fit my room needs but we'll see how everything else goes.

After I feel like my truck's engine and tranny can stay cool I'll start building up the hp but I wan't to make sure everything is going to stay running cool before then.

Having a blast learning and working on my truck as I go :thumb:!!

Good stuff man. I noticed you've posted three updates with no responses and I wanted to let you know that we're still following you and wishing you well.

So here's some pics of the progress.
7.3 coming out of the 01!

Looks pretty good! Steel forged connecting rods were very good to see.

351 coming out of the 94! Don't rlly know what to do with this engine. It still runs well, think it's got about 20-25K miles on it with a ford factory warranty. Any ideas? I can tell you that it's way to under powered for a F-350.

The old core support off!

"New" core support that will fit the larger 7.3 radiator. Going to have to have it painted white to match the rest of the truck. Also found some 3" exhaust tubing that i'm going to clean up and try to use for my intercooler/air intake tubing.

Had to change out the motor mounts and did some fabricating on the crossmember and the 7.3 went right in. Pretty exciting moment.

Wow I figured the picture thing out, lol. All these pics are from my phone and not great but its better than nothing.
Now the hard part, the nightmare of hooking up the wiring/computers from the 94 351 to accept the 01 7.3. My head starts to hurt jst looking at it.

So a good portion of the wiring is done. What a nightmare! Worked on the fuel system conversion pretty much all day. Going from gas to diesel that is. Replaced the fuel pumps and the lines. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but it was more time consuming, if that makes any sense.
Front tank down. Also got rid of the old ghey exhaust.

Back tank down! Also replaced the fuel inlet because of the different size diesel pumps. Almost forgot about that, facepalm, lol. By the end of the day the tanks were back up and some of the new fuel lines were in place. Even put 5 gallons of DIESEL into each tank, so glad to be done with gas. If all goes well she might get a test crank tmrw. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one. Don't rlly expect it to crank over the first time, but we'll see. :)

So I worked on the fuel system and wiring for awhile again yesterday. The biggest thing however was getting the clutch, 6 speed tranny, and transfer case in place. Had to torch some new holes in the transmission cross support, but surprisingly was able to keep everything else the same. Wasn't quite able to crank it, but was able to get some other stuff done. With the longer tranny and transfer case i'm going to have to have my driveshaft shortened along with the 4x4 driveshaft lengthened. So both of those will have to be rebuilt.

Does anybody have any advice on whether one air intake system is any better than the next? Was toying with building my own, but i've been building so much lately I may just order one for the ease.

Got more work done today on the wiring system installed the starter, and even turned the engine over with the key which was pretty exciting.
Tranny and transfer case mounted!

The wiring job...did I tell you it was a nightmare!?!?!?...lol

Have 3 4x4 drive shafts. The one on the left is from the 01 F-350 the one in the middle is the one off the 94 F-350, and the one on the right is off a dodge. Hopefully between the three of these I can make what I need to get this truck rolling.

Just fun to see the 7.3 in there!

Wow, this thing is coming along waaay faster than I thought it would. Nice job so far.

#16 · (Edited)
Thanks man! I didn't expect it to go this fast either. Everything as of yet has gone fairly smooth and there hasn't been very many surprises which is nice.

So today was a good day. After hooking up the injector computer we decided to try it out and this is what happened...

Thanks! It felt pretty good to see it crank up after all that "ify" wiring, lol.

So over the past couple days i've been working on little things here and there. Put on the gas and brake/clutch pedals. Also got the clutch master and slave cylinders hooked up. Biggest thing I guess was that I was able to attach the 4x4 drive shaft. So now when I get the core support and radiator all hooked up I should be able to take it for a little test drive! Hopefully that'll happen on monday. If everything else goes according to plan. Next big thing is going to be running the air intake and intercooler pipes an such. Hoping I have enough piping with the correct bends so all I have to do is weld everything together. I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel for this engine swap. :)

So I ran into a bit of a problem yesterday with the radiator I thought i'd be able to use. The radiator shop said that they could clean it for me but that it would be very weak. So on that note, does anyone know if one radiator is really better than the next?

For example, is this radiator going to make that big of a difference as compared to this radiator ?

#20 ·
problem with both those is that they are for a IDI, not a powerstroke, you need a 95-97 for the proper cooling system/power stroke.

on that not i run the spectra in my bronco, its works just fine cooling my 302

So I was able to get the core support and fender back from the body shop newly painted to match the rest of my truck. Well the fender will look better than the rest of the truck, tbh. Some pics of the progress Installed the brake & clutch pedals and installed the shifter. Also got the master and slave cylinder primed and put on. Looks kinda cool seeing the shifter sitting in there every time I open my door.
New core support partly installed, along with fitting in the intercooler.
"New" radiator I was able to get off a friends 95 powerstroke that he's parting out.
Spent most of yesterday working on mounting the intercooler to the core support. Top brackets shown.
Hole that was cut and bottom mounting bracket.
Also purchased a new vacuum pump, power steering pump, and some new door hinges.

Forgot to take a pic of the newly painted fender. Lot of little tedious stuff left. Prolly wiring is the main thing that i'm going to have to get finished up with. Hopefully next time i'll be able to upload a vid of it running and rolling. Another thing are the innercooler pipes that are going to have to be custom fabricated and bent. Guess we'll see how that goes.

#23 ·
So I once again forgot to take pics of the progress, but here's an update anyhow. We were able to get the air conditioning condenser fitted in. Also bolted on the radiator and attached the radiator hoses. So we found out that we may be able to use the original intake pipes for the intercooler. That would be awesome and save me at least a days work. So i'm getting pretty close to having just simple stuff left to get done. Exciting!

So today was an exciting day as we were able to put antifreeze and water in the radiator, crank this baby up, and take it on a very short trip! Here's some pics of what it's looking like.
Have the intercooler all set in its final resting place! Almost looks like it came that way from the factory...ok maybe not but it's close enough for me.
Worked a little bit on removing the old automatic shifter. Also i'm trying to get my tachometer to work. Does anybody have any knowledge as to what they run off of? I'm having some trouble finding out how to wire it up to work with the 7.3 coming from the 351????

Also got my new door hinges bolted on today. They are so nice! I don't have to pick my door up anymore for it to close, lol. Ordered a diamond eye 4" downpipe and 5" exhaust system today so hopefully that'll come in by next week. Going to order the air intake tomorrow morning if I can decide on one.

Here's some vids of the second and third start ups since I put the 7.3 in my truck. It has a bit of a miss in the first vid but it sounds like its working itself out by the second vid.
Second Start Up!!

Third Start Up!!!

Well I can now say that a good 90% of the wiring is done! It's so time consuming. Also got the newly painted fender on and put the hood back on. It made it look so close to being done. I rigged up some intercooler piping but I'll be surprised if it works. Prolly going to have to custom fab different ones after all. I also noticed that the dipstick tube flange is leaking. Seams like its a pretty common problem with this year PSD. Hopefully i'll be able to fix it without having to pull the engine but to get it done right I may have to. Still waiting for the exhaust and cold air intake systems to come in. Hopefully i'll be able to install those as soon as they get in. That light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and brighter, lol.

So, things are looking really good, and we're getting so close to getting this truck on the road. Here's some stuff that's gotten done over the past several days.
Got the oil pressure and water temp gauges hooked up and working.
Image
[/URL]That's what we had to do to get the intercooler piping to work for my truck. Those pics are closeups of 3" exhaust piping that we used in place of the factory piping. Hopefully the boots hold up to the psi.
Got the fender on. It looks better than the rest of the truck.
Also got the front grill installed along with the lights. It's so cool to pop my hood and see the 7.3 sitting in there. It sounds pretty good too.

Some things that still need to get done. Still waiting for my 4" downpipe. Even though I ordered it on the 21st of Feb, Thoroughbred Diesel said that Diamond Eye takes awhile to ship their stuff. Dunno if that's just a cover up or what but i'm a little ticked off about that. They said that it just shipped today and should arrive on thursday or friday. Once that comes in i'll be able to install the rest of the system which has already come in. I'll make another update once I install the exhaust system and get the AFE cold air intake in there.

Thanks man! You got a pretty nice truck yourself.

Very nice to see a build thread that actually gets past the " plans to do " list lol. You really gitrdone
Deff been a lot of working hours.

So a bit of an update. Got the 01 downpipe in and installed. It shipped 2 weeks after i ordered it which set me back a good bit time wise. It was a bit of a ***** to get back there. Ended up having to cut it in 3 different places and bend it to fit back there. Guess it was worth it though to have a 4" downpipe. Got some of the air intake in place. Going to have to do a little work on it too however. Its for a 94 7.3 so I guess there is a difference in the engines as far as the intake. I think I can get to work. Sure hope I can that thing was a little on the expensive side for an air intake. I also forgot to take a pic of the work after we got done bending the downpipe, but here's a pic and vid anyhow.

New turbo back exhaust system.

Finally Running and Driving vid!!

After we got the downpipe on we took it out for a midnight drive. Everything sounds pretty good, but it seams to be low on power. Not sure if its because we're using the 4x4 drive shaft or if that would make a difference. Have had a lot of other stuff to get done over the past couple weeks so haven't had as much time to get this build done. Hopefully over the next day or so i'll get the rest of the exhaust system done and then its off to get the rear driveshaft shortened. Not much of an update but it is what it is.

So progress had been a bit slower lately. Here's a short and crappy walk around video of the new afe air intake. Installed the 4" downpipe and 5" exhaust. Also been doing some small wiring tweaking and other stuff here and there. Its at the drive shaft shop, and should be done sometime next week.
1994 7.3 walk around
Check engine light is on and the tach still doesn't work quite right, but we'll get it figured out.

#32 ·
Looks great man! What part of SA are you in? Is it still low on power?

#33 ·
Thanks! I live in Bulverde/Spring Branch area. It does still seam to lack some get up and go that a normal 7.3 has. Hopefully next week I can hook up a code reader that a friend of mine is letting me borrow and see what codes its giving.
