why do some trucks have staggered rear shocks, while others are on the same side?

Why did ford do that-The optimum mounting is one on each side of the axle, but I have noticed some shortbed trucks are both mounted towards the rear? It seems like a crap shoot too-My 05 has them staggered (crewcab shortbed) but my 04 has them both facing the rear (ccsb as well). What gives? Is it a clearance thing? Most ecsb seem to both be mounted towards the rear-is it a space thing?

I've always wondered this myself.

I understand this-but what I'm asking is why, for example, does truck A have staggered rear shocks, while truck B does not. It would make sense if it was based on cab configuration, but like I said, I have seen identical trucks where one will be staggered, and one will have both shocks to the rear of the differential.

Also curious...my 04 crew cab 8ft bed are both toward the rear when I did my lift they sent me the brackets for staggered and the pro comp technical support guy had no idea what I was talking about

I believe Ford started staggering shocks in 05 when they changed the body style. Which would explain why your 05 has them and your 04 does not. No positive but I think thats what why.

the shocks on my early 99 are staggered (ccsb) as well!

I think the shocks on my 95 were staggered. Cant remember exactly. But i'm pretty sure my brother's 84 chevy has them staggered.

I know staggered is better, that isn't the question. The question, as posed, is why do some superduty's have staggered shocks, while others both face the rear?

Correct, but the change actually happened at the very end of 04 production

03 f350 cclb both towards rear, so I don't think it's a sb thing

kinda off topic but why is my early 99 rear brakes staggered?

Mostly cost, uses the same caliper on both sides so only one part number needed and only have to stock one part at the assembly plant. Downfall was they had to add the rock guard to the forward facing caliper so this was phased out.

This has nothing to do with trim levels, cab setups, gvw's, etc. They changed back to a staggered design towards the very end of 04. All trucks 05 and up are staggered.
