Hey all kind of a rant here but I'm trying to figure out why its cheaper to go out and buy a newer nicer 6.0 vs a 7.3? I know I know the 6.0 has issues but with todays technology and product advancement there are ways to fix such issues. The way I see it is a truck that is older should be worth less. Im looking to get another truck and this seems to not the case. Yeah I could go out and buy a 7.3 with 250,000-300,000 miles for a decent price but I don't really want to. My end goal is to have a vehicle that produces 500 rwhp in a daily driven application. What would you guys do? Go out and buy that $20,000-$25,000 7.3 with less than 100,000 miles put another $10,000 into it or buy a 6.0 for around $18,000, delete it, tune it, stud it and watch deltas. Going the 6.0 route a tune alone will get me mostly to my goal, with more room to build on. I love the 7.3s but geez these things are getting ridiculous in price. All opinions welcome. Don't know what responses ill get since this is the 7.3 section but lets discuss this.:ford:

Simply put, because the "legendary durability" of the 7.3 and the "legendary crappiness" of the 6.0 have driven the markets to where they are....that's why it's cheaper. If you can look past the bias and what's generally accepted as truth (about each engine) you have some good ammo to pick up your next truck.

I swore for years that I'd never own a 6.0 and was a die hard 7.3 guy......until I started working on them and actually seeing how/why they break like they do. 95% of it IMO is preventable by the owner (not just with "bulletproofing") with good maintenance and not going full :tard: until the truck is built.....same as any other engine. Bonus points that it's a relatively easy engine to work on once you get to know it.

When I went to buy my truck and saw the same thing like you (E99s with 200k+ and dented bodies had 22k asking prices) and when I'd ask why the salesman would just smile and say "because it's a 7.3". Perception is reality, and the masses perceive that the 7.3 is the cats meow and the 6.0 sucks donkey balls....and the prices reflect.

Like you said though....it's a great thing if you're looking to pick up a used 6.0 and don't mind doing some work.

I've gotta buddy that sells used cars. 6.0's sit on his lot for months while a 7.3 is gone the same day it comes in. He says lots of guys come in looking for a 7.3 and get mad at him when he tries to show them a 6.0. Both engines have their reputations, deserved or not. The prices are what the market dictates.

I love me a good 7.3... I really really do, but they are a snail compared to a 6.0. You honestly can't beat a 7.3 for a work or plow truck. But for a DD its a chore to drive them, the 6.0 just has the refinement. The vgt turbo really does wake it up as well... And if after that $5000 tune up your truck is having problems that only means one thing... You or your mechanic (whoever did the work) really screwed up and has no business working on a diesel.

People also tend to forget that the money you save on engine repair gets spent everywhere else on the 7.3. The crappy front ends and transmissions really do nickel and dime you to death. They are also so rusted out now that working on them is only fun with a stick of dynamite...

Drive both... You will see why a lot of us love the 6.0. Once you actually understand them you wouldn't trade a good one for the world. And you can find a good one for an insanely low price.......... Both the 7.3 and the 6.0 share a very common trait though, if maintained you literally can't kill them. People often forget that the HEUI systems do in fact protect the base motor... You run low on oil, the truck dies. You hang an injector, pull valve cover and replace the injector... Unlike a CR system that pretty much guarantees you torch a piston. The only time you have serious problems with a 6.0 is when you fail to change the oil and coolant. And if you have a monitor and half a freaking brain it isn't hard to find a good one. You will look at lot, but there are a lot of very good running 6.0s out there.

The 7.3 is a much longer lasting engine. The 6.0 was a rush job to meet new EPA requirements that the 7.3 was incapable of passing. The 6.0 is a less industrial application engine. In general any time an engine is small and has more horsepower than a larger, lower horsepower engine it will not last as long. In other words the service factor of the 7.3 is greater. Along with the fact the 6.0 is renown for its problems. BUT I will say that the 6.0 uses the new front suspension style still being used today and that is quite a bit smoother.

I like to stick with what I know personally, and that's 7.3L super duty leaf spring trucks. The issues that rise with 99-up 7.3 trucks I am mostly confident to handle just because they are the only diesel trucks I have owned, and I know several other people that own them as well.

As long as I can keep scooping up $4,000 7.3 4x4's I will own one, couldn't be happier with the recent one I just bought in my sig. But I am a work truck guy so what works for me might not work for someone that is looking for a weekend warrior type truck.

Now, 10 years from now if all that's left in my price range are 6.0's I guess I'll just have to familiarize myself with them, but I hope there are plenty of 7.3's that are going to be around in the future.

I guess I am part of that general populace when it comes to scouting out a truck - I don't even click on an ad if it's a 6.0 or 6.4 and the 6.7 are way too $$$ for me so that leaves me with one option - 7.3L all the way!

Your question brings to mind the old saying "there's no replacement for displacement". While the 6.0 is a good engine, albeit misunderstood by most, it will always be the smaller brother of the legendary 7.3 in many peoples eyes. There is where the dollar values come from.
Everywhere I go in my 7.3, someone, somewhere along my trip will comment about the "wonderful 7.3" that he should have his butt kicked for selling. Good memories are hard to kill. That's why I'm driving one.

You asked your question in the 7.3 section, your going to get a positive 7.3 response
You ask in the 6.0 section, you'll get a positive 6.0 response.

If your only looking for 500 hp as a DD then go with a 05-07 6.0

I built a 575 hp 7.3 as a DD. sold it to buy a 6.7 cummins so I can build for 1,000 hp DD.

To answer the question, "which is better?"

My answer, the one you like driving better. I just love a 7.3. Don't hate the 6.0. Just love the 7.3. Something about it. If you prefer 6.0s, get one! If you prefer 7.3s get one! Maybe one day all the children of the world can join hands and come together to end the everlasting 7.3 vs 6.0 debate!

Because its the one that rings the most true, yet it's the one that's the most ignored.

Oil threads, tire threads, 6.0/7.3/6.4 threads, Ford vs. Chevy.....it's all the same.

Which is best? The one YOU think is best....not the one that everybody else thinks is best....that being said, sometimes there's good information given in other's opinions to help make a better choice, but still, it comes down to what the end user thinks is best.

I'll go back to my corner now lol....

I have a 280k mile 6.0 on 37s that runs like the cats meow? :dunno: thought they were junk

Like you have read, and will read....it's all personal opinion,....you pick wat ya want....I could t pass on a newer truck for less money....now given a 6.0'can have trouble but like said, but problems are understood and solved...you want power or reliabltity...
That's how I look at it.....with power comes problems.....you can either have fast, reliable, or cheap.....you can't have 3..... But I do like to say with the 6.0 can have all three pretty easy...fast and cheap are no problem,....if you willing to put in the time and effort you can have the 3rd for not much more......lol but that's just my thoughts...but like most of these threads....7.3 owners will say buy a 7.3 and 6.0'guys will say the other....pick wat you like and can afford...l

Glad to see I got some responses. I was just wondering how everyone felt. The truck in my sig I sold a couple of years ago and it was by far the worst mistake I have made as far as vehicles go. I don't really care that the 6.0 has a not so hot reputation. To be honest I would be happy with either one, I think it really just depends on what I come across. I love the 7.3 and have driven a few 6.0s and I'm thoroughly impressed with both. Thanks for a good conversation guys.

I kick myself daily for selling my 7.3 believe me....

Doesn't mean I wouldn't drive a 6.0, which is undoubtedly more refined.

6 head bolts per cylinder is better than 4
pre emissions (7.3l)
reliability out of the box(7.3l doesn't need bulletproofed from the factory even if chipped)

injector issues(haven't seen anyone with injectors that last even with the blue spring mod)

my opinion, skip it all, if you have 20k to 25k to spend....

buy a 05-07 with the 5.4l gaser/v10(cheap).... sell engine, swap in a 24v cummins 5.9l or 6.7l and built 4r100...... reliable and cheap horsepower.......
if you want reliability, buy a 7.3l. if you want go fast and no proven(key word) reliability pick up a 6.0.....
