I think mine is starting to leak, not overheating, just have a small leak from somewhere. Any tips on how to check the water pump ? I know it has a weep hole, kinda hard to see
Thanks, Jim

Seems a lot are using the BPD billet water pump. I chose to save 100 bucks and go with the KC water pump with stainless impeller instead.

Not yet. It's still sitting in the box with the new turbo. Will be getting installed next week.

BPD's water pump is a thing of beauty...don't remember the box.

I never had a water pump issue with either engine in my truck, 135 and 80k. When I installed a late ‘04 front cover that uses the larger water pump on the rebuild, I bought an Airtex. They were the OE supplier.

It has the plastic impeller, which does not worry me. From what I remember, it was the early trucks which had the impeller cracking issue. Leaking seals seem to be a 150k issue when they do. Mileage will vary on coolant, coolant change, operating temp, and coolant flushing agents.

From the engineer who designed the early and late water pumps, they were a good company when he worked there and actually made the retail parts on the same production line. Not sure the components are, as many manufacturers change things between OE and their aftermarket offerings. The aftermarket price on these is higher than the common retail aftermarket from Gates and other brand names, and usually brand names will add $$ for the name. Airtex is not as the same name recognition.

For what its worth, mine is original and isn't leaking or having issues, I just feel that it is a good time to replace it as I just turned 170K and I'm having a lot of other work (heads, studs, BPD EGR cooler, etc.) done at the same time.

Only way to find it is to remove the pulley and look under it with a mirror. If it isn't coming from the manifold donut or other local source it is probably your water pump. Once you're in that far and it is an older pump, might as well replace it.

I’ve used the Dieselsite water pump with the metal impeller. Seems to be a great pump for the price and has a lifetime warranty.

Just did mine. Stainless impeller pump for me. Idk that it's better than stock, but whatever.
My 230k stock impeller (06) was in good shape and still tight on the shaft. Mine blew the seals and put more coolant on the ground than through the motor.
I replaced the fan clutch while I was at it, since I was in there and didn't want to go back.
