So I know the the dealership is probably the surest way to know your filters are legit and not counterfeit. But just for the sake of stumbling on to a legit place with better pricing....here I am. $35 oil filter $85 fuel at my local dealership.

Rockauto is about half of that. A little more after shipping. You can often find the Parker Racor oil filters cheaper than the motorcraft. I purchased one from ebay and I'm pretty sure it's identical to the motorcraft.
Edit: swagperformance $65 for oil and fuel filter kit.

I might spring for the kit w/air filter next time, since the 4th crept up on me so fast...so I will bite the bullet and get them at the dealership this time. Rock auto rocks as well.

You don't get what I am saying. How can you tell you aren't getting proper filtration? China fakes look exactly (or almost exactly) like the real things these days. Not worth going cheap on filtration (or most other parts for that matter).

Also:

Holders Diesel is VERY good.

They talk about aftermarket filters at about the 13 minute mark (they talk about the importance of the real OEM thing).

Again guys - it is a foolish place to try to save a few dollars. We hear so many stories about problems with the high pressure oil system or injectors. Quite a few of them are caused by poor filtration. The fakes that are being made are not discernibly different from OEM. We are talking about the potential for issues being WAY down the line, not anything that will happen the minute you use them. Example - lung cancer from smoking ......................

I've bought them from Dieselfiltersonline and the Racor store.

Since the company I worked for was an OE and Motorcraft supplier to Ford, our guys had to go through the Ford training about copyright tags on products. Then, they followed their rotational spec changes, which would be little marks on the products that look like poor machining or stampings.

After my company closed down my test facilities, this incident was going on, brake products sold as Ford parts from Federal-Mogul. The people who bought them could not tell the difference. What really freaked me out when I first heard about it, Dieselfiltersonline is in Paterson, but they were not involved. It was mostly geared towards selling to cab companies in NYC.

Be sure to estimate the micron filtration size to see if it matches OEM (btw - 20 micron is not visible). Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but not entirely. People can only do so much against some extremely well done counterfeiting. Not so much in our filters, but seal material is another area counterfeited. Less durable (temperature rating and abrasion resistance) and cheaper material will look identical.

Just be careful at Walmart (or any store with the parts on the shelf). People have shown that shoppers often times swap the aftermarket filters with the Motorcraft ones at Walmart, so they have the Motorcraft filters in a cheaper aftermarket box.

This subject of filters and possible counterfeits has been discussed in depth longer than just about any other 6.0L topic.

I agree, who knows what we been running in our 6.0's. I think I am just gonna stick with dealer bought filters until I do more research. Just have to spread them out so I am not dishing out too much coin at once. Just bought four gallons of Rotella t6 15/40 oil $22X4, oil filter $32 and fuel filters $84. Getting ready for a short trip to the in laws cabin for a 4th of july weekend. May need a ICP sensor, started getting a little bit of rough idle every now and then...died out on idle once. Got to look into that if fuel filters make no change.
