What oil is right?

I recently changed my oil for the first in my used '03 7.3; after about 1200 miles, the oil is still clear and the crankcase is full. I used Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 because it is the least costly to buy and it also conforms to the Ford oil specification for the engine. I will probably go with Mobil1 for Pickups and SUVs the next time; it meets the SAE standard of CI-4. It also comes in 5-quart jugs, exactly 3 of which are needed for the oil change. Shell Rotella T synthetic is another choice which also meets the API certification of CI-4Plus. I do not know what the "plus" means; I do know that the Delvac has the same ratings. Neither Shell nor Mobil specifically have the Ford specification, but both say that they (the suppliers) recommend their products for the Power Stroke.

Any responses or other suggestions?

Mobil Delvac is what BART (Bay area rapid transit) has changed to, they don't change there oil at all, they just change the filters and add more oil. I sell mobil in our shop and the salesman sold me on it. I have run it in my 99 F350 for about a year now, I have changed the filter once. It has been to Canada and back to california and the wife and I go a lot. I have about 16K on the oil and am thinking about changing it. I just don't want to rush into anything. Mike OB

I changed my oil about 3 weeks and 600 miles ago using Rotella 5W-40 synthetic and a PureOne filter. Advance Auto parts sells the PureOne filter; you have to ask for it where I live because they do not display it on the shelf. They had a sale where I paid $5.00 each (I bought 3). So far, so good. :boldblue:

Check out Bobistheoilguy.com. You'll find alot of information out about Schaeffer's Oil as well as most any other oil on the market. I know Schaeffer's is a sponsor there, but so is Amsoil and some others.

Here's a link to the Schaeffer's technical data for 9000 Supreme:

oil

I have had great luck over the years with Rotella synthetic blend, not just with this diesel, but with my 95 which I slod with 224,000 miles on it and running strong. Also I ahve used synthetic fuel stabilizer on occaision when I have a couple of extra bucks in my pocket. les

Has anyone used Castrol Tection? I have used Castrol in my cars and motorcycles for years and when I got into my Honda 500 cc for an alternator/generator replacement at 80,000 miles the aluminum innards were as clean and shiny as the outsides, and the cars have never needed any teardown. My '82 diesel Rabbit got run into at 270,000 miles and always had Castrol GTX. That's my testimonial for Castrol, and would like to use their diesel product if someone else has tried it and likes it.

i personally would stick to rotella.
i dont mind changing my oil every 3-5k. gives me a chance to get a good look at the bottom side (ie. looking for leaks, worn parts, and ect.)

In all fairness, Rotella, Mobil, Castrol, Motorcraft, they are all good oils. I used to swear by Delvac in the Marine engines is severe hard going... But the truth is they are probably all good enough. Ford Australia is saying Castrol RX Super, even Castrol Tection Plus... In all fairness, I would not worry about which one I used anywhere near as much as HOW OFTEN I CHANGED IT!!!! :burnout

Severe work, like here in Oz, towing? Or severe work like in running big chips and street drags? I would change the oil closer to 3500 miles, and then I do not think it matters which of the good choices above... 5000 km here in Oz, not the Factory listed 7500 or the Factory listed 5000 miles. If it is hard going, change it more frequently, then the oil choice is not much to talk about of the above ones..

Regards from the Lone Ranger, changing oil since the 60's... Ha!
