Okay so, on the 03+ excursions and 05+ superduties that have steering wheel controls for the radio, what does the actual controlling of the radio? When you push the volume or mode button on the steering wheel, where does that signal go?

My truck didn't come with steering wheel controls, so I'm wondering if I could add them for the radio controls, I already know that, for me at least, it's impossible to add AC/Heater controls

Ahh so you want to know if the harness is there on a truck without the wheel controls that I don't know

I do use the heck out of those controls on mine

I had a pioneer and it had an add on remote for the steering wheel it was a thumb controlled remote

wonder if Avic has one ?

Yeah, I've seen the wheel mounted remote. I'd rather have the wheel controls. I'm somebody's done this.

Well, the way it is right now, you can't tell my truck has an aftermarket radio. With the wheel mounted remote it's a dead giveaway.

I need to find a wiring diagram for the 05+ trucks. Looks like I'm off to scour 12volt.com

Yeah, it was basic info over there. I need an actual schematic.

Steering wheel controls send individual resistance to the radio head unit depending on which button is pushed. On my 2006, it is pin 18 in the radio plug. Some newer aftermarket headunits have a learning mode that allows you to assign commands to each button and doesnt require an adapter. You probably have a blank spot on the radio plug where you could add this in if you updated the steering wheel to a later model unit.

Rossterman, Thanks for the info! I am putting an aftermarket Pioneer HU in the truck. I guess my question then would be does the steering wheel that has the Audio controls have A) a different clock spring than mine that just has cruise? and B) is there a harness that goes from the wheel to the new HU?

Subscribing for more info. I also would like to upgrade my steering wheel for one that has audio controls if there are harness connections for a relatively seamless install. This is in preparation for upgrading the head unit from the stocker as well.

Not sure on the clock spring. You might try checking part numbers to see if different between vehicles with and without controls. My guess is they are the same as the wiring harnesses are common and plugs exist in the dash for things like SOTF, back up sensors, etc, even if truck came without these options.

You might first check to see if there is a wire present in position 18 on the radio plug. If so, Id guess the wiring is in place already
