I'm beating a dead horse I know, but I picked up a travel trailer and plan on towing a number of miles this summer so I want to switch to synthetic motor oil. I have read reviews of Rotella T6, it's my understanding that it creates frequent regenerations or it used to at least. What is the general consensus of Valvoline premium blue full synthetic?

Ok, I will get the party started. The common mis-conception is that oil wears out in short the time we have them in our vehicles. That isn't correct, it will wear out eventually but only after thousands and thousands of miles. Syn oil lasts longer then petro based oil but they last far longer then most folks realize. So, why do we change it so often? Because it gets dirty.

In factories and power plants where oil lubricates equipment that runs continuously at high temps they run the oil through a filter press to clean it and test it every year or 2, (yes year or 2) . If it still meets specs they put it right back in. This goes on for several cycles.

So you don't change you oil because it wore out, you change it because it got dirty. There are companies out there that will sell you a by pass filter that will let you run your oil for thousands of miles with occasional test to ensure it is still good. And they drive all day everyday with a lot more stress on their motor then our trucks will ever see.

Syn oil is better for heat then petro oil and will last longer, but neither are differences that will make any difference to our powerstokes because we don't operate in those extremes any way.

So every 5k miles I change my oil because it is starting to get dirty and dirty oil is bad for my truck. And years ago we changed every 3k miles because there was lead in the fuel and the filters were not as good and it got dirty quicker.

I've seen threads in other forums that indicate that PBX handles soot better than T6 and results in few regens than T6. I've switched because it has been on sale at NAPA until today for less than T6 and the new T6 is not yet on Ford's approved list while PBX is the only full synthetic big brand name that is on the list.
I also spent last summer towing my 10K fifth wheel with PBX. Go for it.

There are plenty of other brands to choose from. Any on Ford's approved list will work. The off brands met Ford's specification much sooner than the big names.

Valvoline PB 5w40 is sold by NAPA but maybe not stocked at some of the smaller stores. Last month, NAPA had PB 5w40 on sale for $19.99 a gallon. They could order it for you is what I would think.

no, your truck is gonna blow up.

I've been waiting all year to say that to someone, now I've got it out of me.

No, oil is really oil, and you'd be opening up a can of worms on here asking what oil is the best and such...Personally, I just run motorcraft 15w-40 and a motorcraft filter, change 5-6k, and down the road I go. The motorcraft is a semi-synthetic oil. Works fine.

Full syn from valvoline or rotella t6 runs good, I have run delo 400 conventional 15w-40 in my truck and had a lot of valve noise with it, went back to motorcraft.

Helpful hint...Napa oils are manufactured by Valvoline, just in a napa bottle. Read the print on the back of the bottles sometime...I worked at a napa for many years. Much cheaper oil but same/similar stuff.

However...val blue is a good oil, yes I'd recommend.

You have to catch the VPB on sale. NAPA occasionally, but Amazon is usually around that 20.00 a gallon all the time
Don't overlook the conventional VPB 15w40 if you do not need cold flow properties. 10.00 a gallon in the spring at Menards.
