Starter spun

So after fueling up in the middle of my road trip today, I went to start the truck and the starter spun and grinded on the ring gear.

It's only happened this one time, but it made me wonder why it did it.

I've owned my 1999 superduty 7.3 for 15 years and not once did it ever grind. Not once!

Anybody else grind ever or on occasion?

118,000 on mine and it's never ground. It's typically low voltage from the batteries or a bad starter. In my experience on other vehicles, once it grinds the first time it'll keep doing it more and more often.

Very rare occurance but I remember reading a post on here a while ago where someone had a problem with that and dealer changed flywheel under warranty.

In the past, the grinding noise from the starter could be narrowed down to a couple things -
1) The internals on the starter were wearing out - bendix drive, bearings, etc. The noise will happen almost every time the starter is used.
2) Either the drive gear on the starter or the ring gear on the flex plate is missing a portion of a few teeth. This is caused by the started being engaged while the truck is still running. The best case repair for this is to replace the starter. The worst case repair is to drop the transmission and have the flex plate replaced. This time, the noise will only happen every so often, when the motor stops in the exact spot where the missing teeth mate up with the starter when it engages.

For your sake, I hope the starter is bad. A lot cheaper and easier to replace. Please don't ask how I know.

Hope this helps.

Yep, I've never ground the starter by cranking while it's running, and the truck only has 4600 miles on it, I bought it the end of December 2013. it's a new truck, and the batteries are not the issue.

I know from past rigs though, like the other gentleman said , once it starts.....

I'm really hoping that it was just a freak occurrence where the teeth didn't line up as the starter solenoid engaged...but time will tell.

I also can't stand when the dealer has to rip apart the truck...if it's an issue where they need to drop the Trans to get to the flywheel ring gear....they can mess a whole bunch of stuff up. It's never put back together as well as it was at the factory new.....

This same thing happened to me once after fueling up too. The truck wasn't running but when I tried to start it, it made the quick grinding sound as if it already was. It had me worried for a bit but I waited and tried it again and it started up like nothing happened. The truck had around 11k at the time and now has 24k. Hasn't happened once since then.

Thanks guys, glad to hear it has happened to others (not that it happened) and no ill effects later on.

To answer the question, it ground so I released the key, let it sit for about 10 seconds while I was asking myself, did that just really happen? Then I turned the key and it was fine. Hasn't happened since.

Thanks for the replies !

Well fellas it did it again today, 20 minute drive down the interstate, parked the truck turned it off, went into the store , was in for 20 minutes, came out and went to crank it.....zzzzzzzzssssss it went. Turned the key backwards to the off position, waited 5 unbelieving seconds and engaged it again, no problem cranked right up. Started first time rest of the day....but I see a problem brewing....

Has this given you anymore problems? I bought my truck in December of 2013 also, so I'm wondering if this is has something to do with the build time, ie. some bad parts...:eek:hnoes:
