Remove foam air filter...effects?

Replacing my air filter and wondering what effect removing the foam filter has on the engine, performance, air intake etc? Only thing I’ve come across is it helps prevent snow from entering the air box. I’m in Texas so no worry about that.
Does it make a difference either way? Seems like I would get more air into the air box

Makes little to no difference performance wise but does add more surface area. You will also notice a slight rise in Air temp at the MAF

Thanks! I figured it had little effect otherwise everyone would’ve posted how great it was.

The foam insert does not add any filtration capability to the engine, rather it is a fail safe system to insure that the engine can breath should the cold air inlet get packed with snow. Removing the foam will have no adverse effects to filtration but also no relative gains. By removing the foam it will add 80 sq inches of available surface area to the current filter, with the insert in place you generally negate the use of that portion of the filter until the main portion of the filter is loaded and air is drawn from the least restrictive portion of the filter. Proper maintenance will preclude the later.

There was some discussion on this topic a few years ago here: http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/general-6-7-discussion-2011-2016/760658-foam-air-pre-filter.html

I came up with a small increase in surface area as mentioned above but that is probably negated by the increase in air temperature.

The size of the filter media for the filters are:
Big Filter: 45 pleats x 2 sides x 6" wide x 3.25" deep = 1,755 in^2 = ~88% of total
Small Filter: 13 pleats x 2 sides x 6" wide x 1.5" deep = 234 in^2 = ~12% of total
