How do I determine what kind of rear end I have? I have an 02 f250 4 door 4wd.

Mine had two tags, the tag on the drivers side is the "use synthetic lube" tag and the tag on the passenger side tells the rear end info, gear ratio etc.
Ok found the tag, the numbers are as follows: 731052f12 I also found a rear end near me for sale the numbers are 731050813 does anyone know if they are compatible the replacement rear end came out of a 2000 f250 lwb mine is 2002 lwb. Is there anything else I need to consider for the change like the front 4wd gearing i heard if you don't match them when your in 4wd you will have a problem. One more thing on the id tag on the truck it shows a C1 Axel. Don't know if that helps Thanks for the help guys.

Look at your truck. If it is a Ford '99-'03 SuperDuty pickup with single rear wheels (SRW) and a 7.3L diesel engine, then it has a Ford "Sterling" 10.5" rear axle. The "Sterling" means it was manufactured in the Ford axle plant in the little town of Sterling, Michigan.
The only numbers on the axle tag that mean anything to most of us is the "3L73 10 5" at the beginning of the second line. That tells you that you have a 3.73 axle ratio with limited slip and a 10.5" ring gear. If that code were "3 73 10 5", then you would have a 3.73 axle ratio without limited slip, and it would have the 10.5" ring gear.
On most of those axle tags, the first character is covered by a bolt head and/or gunky grease and dirt. So unless you remove the tag and clean it up, you might think it begins with L73 or just 73.

Hank thats awesome info appreciate it and Southpaw thanks for the diagrahm, very helpful. Do either of ya'll know if there is anything to what I said about the front axel gearing and the rear axel gearing having to match. Also if the replacement isn't a limited slip is it a big deal? Thanks James
Yes, you must match the gearing on both axles if you wish to use 4x4 without breaking things. Not having the limited slip rear won't hurt anything, you would just have more traction with it.
you can swap over the carrier units in the diffs them selves if one is LS and the other isnt and just make it LS.
