My 1999 F250 randomly downshifted and went into limp home mode the other day. The overdrive light started blinking. The weird thing is it seems to drive fine when I turn off overdrive.
Took it to Aaction transmission and they are saying it threw a couple codes.
The codes were P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction and a P0783 3-4 Shift Malfunction

They want $300 just to take transmission apart and dig into what's throwing the codes! I have seen other guys say it could be anything from a blown fuse, to the VSS, or solenoids.

Not sure what to do because my gut tells me these guys are just going to tell me to rebuild the tyranny. I have seen enough warnings from others to be cautious about going that route.

Any thoughts?

My bad the mechanic just told me the code was for a Turbine Speed Sensor not the Variable Speed Sensor. To tell you the truth I'm not a mechanic and have no idea what the difference is. They said they could replace the turbine solenoid for $395 instead if I wanted to go that route.

Still not sure what to do

Turbine sensor sorry not solenoid and they said where it is positioned on the transmission is so hard to get to they would still have to take the tranny out of the truck.

So $295 to take it out and then if its the turbine sensor they would apply the $295 to the cost of repair making it $395 to diagnose and replace the turbine sensor
