Oil Change Interval

I Have read many articles on this forum and it seems that the general consensus is that folks change their oil every 5000 miles or every 6 months.

Well, I inheirited my Dad's 06 F350 6.0. It has just under 92K miles on it. He changed the oil (dino, no synthetic) every 3000 miles religiously (I have all the receipts).

I changed the oil right after we got the truck down to TX from OR in June of 21. I used Rotella T6 15W-40 synthetic. The bottom line is, I have only put about 1300 miles on the truck in the 2 years I have had it. It gets about 11 MPG so I don't drive it much but for when it is needed. I do drive it to work on Fridays just to keep the juices flowing.

I just changed the oil this weekend and switched it up to Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic. I haven't put any miles on it, but 2 years between oil changes just seemed....well....wrong so I just went ahead and did it. Was it really necessary? (The truck seems quieter, we'll see how it goes as for consumption. It didn't use a drop with 15w-40).

My question is, since I am driving this truck so little, when do I change the oil? If it were any other type of car I would never change the oil until I hit 5000 miles. I just changed over a $100 worth of oil out of my truck that had only 1300 or so miles on it. Then again, at my current rate of driving, it could take 5 years to get to 5000 miles.

Is time a critical factor in the decision? Or just the miles?

Your advise would be appreciated.

I say miles based unless you drive <5000 a year...then, change it once a year.

Annually would be recommended based on the limited use the truck sees. I put on roughly 1k a month, but I also daily my truck and haul stuff for work. I don't see a need for more frequent oil changes. Especially considering the COST of oil these days. I paid about $120 JUST in oil for the truck, and that's sitting next to my toolbox at work until about September when I'm ready to do it again.

I need an "other" option. For severe duty Ford recommends 7500 miles with full synthetic on my 2016. I have a Fulmoto valve on the oil pan and I take a sample at 7500 mile and have it analyzed. So far the oil has come back good enough to run it to 10k miles, the recommended normal duty schedule. I run Rotella T6.

IMO - The abuse this oil takes from lubrication to firing the injectors takes it's toll. I'll stick with every 5k.

If the oil is to expensive to be changing with no miles on it, then owning a vehicle that just sits there is to expensive.
