I've been changing all the original parts out in my 2002 F350 7.3 before they go bad and leave me stranded....getting ready to do the alternator- normally I ALWAYS use Motorcraft parts....but noticed that some people highly recommend other name brands, being NEW as opposed to remanned- I only tow campers and trailers....no heavy duty lights or upgrades....looking to install the best choice alternator that will give me great performance and a LONG, long life like this original OEM alternator has.....should I stick with Motorcraft.....or is another name a better choice?? Thanks for the input!!

MOST PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU THAT THE FACTORY ALTERNATOR IS SLIGHTLY UNDER POWERED.....AND WHEN I HAD PROBLEMS WITH MINE.....I REPLACED IT WITH A NEW BOSCH ALTERNATOR.....135 AMP.....FROM ROCKAUTO.COM.....WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY.....

HERE IS THE LINK TO MY POST SHOWING THE ALTERNATOR AND THE PART NUMBER.....

Another question....with this alternator- is there going to be any issues with the battery cables/wiring harness being the original OEM....I haven't upgraded the wiring harness yet- some people mention the need to upgrade your wiring if you are going to install a higher output alternator....I am a little nervous about changing the alternator in general....in all the reading I have done, so many people talk about their issues of burning through alternators and batteries....I am almost a little scared to tip the apple cart while everything is still working....but of course I would rather change it out before I discover it is bad at a less than "Opportune" time.....

Thanks for the input....the Bosch seems to be a popular choice....I looked on Riff Raff and they don't even carry the Motorcraft reman alternator- they only carry new Bosch alternators....Humpf- must be a reason for that....thanks again!!

The factory wiring can handle the 135/140a Bosch alternator without problems. Ford's sizing has worked for up to 180a alternators as long as the continuous current flow is not at the max for long periods. And the only way to do that would be a winch or very, very high amp sound system.

I've often recommended that NEW Bosch unit for the 7.3L and 6.0L. On occasion, they can have an early issue, but it's not a high percentage. In the online world, two failures out of a thousand are a crisis. They definitely have a great warranty when you buy through the right sources. Like all products, the manufacturer can get hard-nosed when something is bought through a non-authorized retailer.

I've been using Delco new from rockauto. They are made in China, but reasonably priced, readily available, and so far have been trouble-free. I have had one on my 7.3 5 years and 45,000 miles. I have one on one of the Corvettes, and I even found one for my neighbor's 911. I was surprised to see a Delco for a Porsche application, but that's what I put on her car.

Another strategy for "reliability" on long trips or into remote areas is to carry a spare alternator behind the seat. They are pretty simple to change out, no special tools as long as you have the belt tensioner tooling thought-out. I've been carrying spare alternators for 25 years on my road trips, I've used my spare alternator more times than I've used my spare tire. (<< Not the Super Duty.)

Purchase a new Delco and put it behind the seat. The original will never fail if you carry a spare.

I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE WIRING OR THE ALTERNATOR.....AS TOOMANYTOYS SAID.....AT 135 AMPS YOU WILL BE SAFE FROM FRYING ANY WIRES.....

WITH THE BOSCH THAT I LISTED.....THE ONLY MODIFICATION THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE IS TO PLACE 1 FLAT WASHER UNDER EACH MOUNTING POINT OF THE ALTERNATOR TO CLEAR THE PULLEY FROM THE MOUNTING BRACKET.....IF YOU SCROLL DOWN IN MY POST YOU CAN SEE I CIRCLED WHERE THEY ARE PLACED.....OTHERWISE.....IT IS PLUG AND PLAY.....

Thanks again....I looked online and the Bosch you listed says it only has a 2 yr warranty....You had mentioned a lifetime warranty with your original reply....not a big deal....just wondering if the warranty changed

If you have a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators they can get yours fixed up for less than the cost of a new Bosch one off Rock Auto. If you can handle the turnaround time and inconvenience of having the truck down for 2-3 days it's not a bad way to go and what I did. Not as much point in buying another one if the one you've got is still working and just needs a freshening up.

I had the 2 original factory Motorcraft alternators on my 0660 with over 175,000 miles and they were still good when i sold the truck. I put over 100,000 miles on my 0273 that i put a 0660 140 amp motorcraft alternator on i got from the ford dealer. I have over 130,000 miles on my 0173 with a motorcraft alternator. Leece Neville is another great brand. Also I never had a problem with any of the factory wiring and i pull a lotta amps with all the crap i have plugged in and wired. You gots to be plugged in a wyr'd to play this song on you truck cassette player.
