My unison ring.

Hey all, I'm in the middle of some PM during my AC R&R after finding a refrigerant leak and early signs of compressor failure.

I'm cleaning the turbo, ridding of the STC fitting, new standpipes and dummy plugs, turbo drain and feed lines, and CAC boots. My turbo has been squeaking after start up when the oil pressure hits the VGT. The unison ring was pretty stuck to the actuator side of the turbo but the monster actuator was still able to operate it. I was dealing the vanes sticking after a hard acceleration so I knew it was about time to clean the thing.

I'm at 111k miles and was wondering how my unison ring is holding up compared to those with around the same miles that have had theirs apart. The slots aren't perfectly straight even on new ones, so what looks work is actually there by design on the vane slots. The actuator eccentric is what seems to wear on these, and obviously cracks do them in too. Mine has a little bit of wear at the actuator eccentric but it really doesn't seem too bad. I think if I would have driven it for an extended period with the ring sticking the eccentric would wear bad.

Replacing the STC fitting with the one piece connector. Technically there is no snap-to-connect fitting after that which is what I meant with my wording. It hasn't failed yet FWIW, it's preventative.

You can see on the surface of the unison ring the marks from the partially seized ring. That's where the squeaks coming from. It took a fair amount of prying to get the ring off the housing.

Your ring is not in as bad shape as mine was when I changed mine. I did change mine since I had it out and apart and did not want to go through the process of reconditioning a turbo again for a very long time. Wish I had a picture of my worn unison ring, but don't.

I found a decent price on the ring ($112) and was thinking about replacing it. But, after looking at it a bit longer the wear in the slot doesn't seem excessive. It's worn slightly but I'm on the fence on replacing it. I'm leaning towards throwing it back in there. The actuator pin has very slight wear but you can hardly see it. Looking at the pin from the top it still looks perfectly round. Of course the only way to fix the pin is replace the turbo or CHRA. Since labor isn't an issue for me I'm thinking about reusing the ring and seeing how it goes after a while, but I'll post a couple more detailed pics of the wear.

I'm measuring .005" of wear on the pin and about .008" wear on the ring slot totaling 13-thousanths total wear at it's loosest spot. It's like a lot but .013" is pretty small.
