Hey all,

I just put a power steering in line filter on the 7.3 excursion. In the bottom libe at the cooler. Pic attached ( looking up from ground) i put itbin start it up and now the hydroboost whines hums when i hit the brakes or turn the wheel. I lifted the frint end and went lock to lock 40 times. Makes no noise turning in the air. Brakes do though. As soon as i put it down it whines. I emailed diesel site but haven't heard back yet . Is my flow backwards? There was no directions at all with the filter. Im about yo pull it to see if that changes anything.....

The big arrow on the filter signifies flow direction.

The whine is either caused by air, or a pressure restriction.

Go lock to lock a few times while pressing fairly hard on the brakes. If its hard to steer or the peddle gets had you have a flow restriction probably caused by the filter.

Maybe flip it over and see what happens? Dunno what that entails. Maybe you can somehow pinch the line?

I had a new PS installed when mine blew out. It was the original I think because it was white (reman are painted black). It was like $750 with new lines and everything. I think the high pressure line was $100.

Is that the proper direction? I cant find anything definitive, i googled pictures and found another filter in the same spot

I pinched the lines to install, very little fluid loss. I have to run and get a double barb if i just remove it . Really a 5 min job turns into this....

Does it both directions

No its dieselsites version.....

Im just gonna hose barb it tonight and see if its fine after that

I sure hope not lol its getting too cold for this now

So i put double barb in. Still making noise. Bleed again lock to lock. Reservoir is full but also frothy. What will it hurt making noise?

And under the hood with the wife turning the wheel/ braking, it sounds like the belt area pump area. Butbyou can hear gargling in the cab some too

honestly I am not sure i would even want a sealed unit on my system

I run a filter but on the bypass line only and it is up by the hydro boost unit so it is easy to service

bypass line runs back to the reservoir

this will also bypass if it 100% clogs due to neglect or massive part failure

@ZMANN bringing this one up.
Just installed the Edelman hydroboost kit with new power steering pump. It came with all new lines and the filter. Wanting to throw mine up top side as well.

Did you install yours on the line that goes out of the hydroboost and to the top port of the pump reservoir on the front side? And arrow towards reservoir or away?
Was thinking that open space above the pulley and intercooler pipe would be a good spot to splice in. Thoughts?

So where exactly did you install and what direction is it going?

on the return line from the hydroboost
the one that looks like a fuel line type
that filter will work fine

the frothy oil means there is air getting into the system, did you let the reservoir run low?
also on your EX is the reservoir part of the pump or remote?

Never ran empty. Just the air from cutting the line and putting the filter on. Res and pump are combined

The oil may be just old and lost some of the anti foam abilities
wouldn't hurt to change it out since you are having problems
not like your gonna get any more air in the system

Yea its on the agenda. I did flush it though in 17. Probably tomorrow or monday....

It can take a long time of driving it to purge the remaining air. Fords are notorious for noisy P/S systems after service where air is introduced.

These filters have an internal pressure-relief valve that opens when the filter element becomes restricted to allow flow to continue even if the element is blocked. This makes the filters sensitive to being properly installed with the flow and the arrow on the filter matching.

Yea im still not a hundred percent which way it flows tho tbh

#25 ·
not a restriction problem with the filter, those hose clamps are not gonna hold back the PSI from the system
the lines would just blow off

shaft seal has failed by coincidence or the oil can no longer release the small bubbles -- and continues to foam
sometimes just sitting a while will let the bubbles separate out in the reservoir

He has the filter on the Powersteering gear return line so IDK how much pressure would ever build if restricted?
but I am pretty sure that filter has a bypass and should have a big arse flow indicator
edit I see the arrow in the OP's pic OP that should be pointed in the flow direction the PS pump reservoir ( from the gear thru the cooler and back to the pump housing

Full system pressure is available there, so yeah the line would go "pop" if restricted

not the place for a filter tho, that would be asking the filter to do full pump flow all the time
I would place it in the hydroboost excess return line -- that line only flows when the brake is released

Hydroboost relief line flows with brakes and when steering is at either side full lock
I know this because that's how I flush my system solo without racing around like crazy trying to fill the res as it empties

this way you can control the flow and leave the truck running as you refill

All i could find was this so thats whyni picked that location. My only question was direction. I think the one in the picture is flowing to the cooler based on googling images of it.

I uses these flush directions when i fluahed it last.

That should be fine but verify flow direction. Dieselsite states you need filters on both return lines for complete protection i wouldn't bother
