I am thinking about deleting the cat and muffler on my 03, but i have heard controversy regarding the loss of back pressure and losing mpg's. Just looking for input as my muffler shop will do it for $65. Thanks

Back pressure applies to naturally aspirated motors not turbocharged motors, back pressure would be fighting against your turbo that's why all the after market exhaust kits for these trucks use a straight through muffler design vs the baffled muffler design. Take all the thoughts of needing back pressure and throw it in the trash because it doesn't apply to turbo diesels.

Anything you can do to make a motor more efficient will benefit you in both power and mileage, if you can make an engine breath easier and exhale easier you are in effect making it more efficient. Not all changes will be drastic but they will be measurable differences.

I have an 06 with the 6.0 and i removed the cat and the muffler and my gas mileage decreased quite a bit. It didnt matter how i drove it, hard or easy it just wasnt even close. Now im going to agree with the other members on here the sound of a straight piped 6.0 is just the awesome. After 6 months of the loud exhaust i went back last weekend to the muffler shop and had them install my cat and muffler and the truck and my ears seem alot happier and my MPG has increased. At 4.05 a gallon that certainly works for me.

this thread is the reason I punched out a spare cat and kept my original. I read 10 post that say it doesnt hurt, then someone comes in and says it killed their mileage. Im not arguing either way, but data is data. There are lots of people who have ditched them, then came back due to the mpg drop. I personally have a gutted cat and mbrp muffler.I have yet to check my mileage since I did it. The way I see it, if I loose more than 1mpg Im putting it back. I know, we drive tanks and they get crappy mileage. None of us buy them to get 34 mpg out of. That being said, for the sole fact of sounding better, Im not willing to take a loss on MPG. Whether I have, has yet to be determined.

DENALI im not telling you to do it or dont do it, if you do it you will LOVE the sound. Redbandit98 you are right, I also read where people say it improves MPG because it frees the exhaust up and other people say it hurt them. I had to try it mainly to lower my EGT's. All i wanted to do was share my experiance with straight pipe. Im sure all trucks react different though.

The shop didn't have good enough machinery to build the muffler delete. They were going to have to order the delete from an outside source. By the time they did thatdid it was going to be +350. For that price I'll save a few more pennies and just get a full 4 or 5 inch straight pipe
