How often to drain water separator?

when I bought this truck about 3 weeks ago I had a Water in fuel light. I drained the water and still had the light, so i changed the sensor and POOF the light went away. this stayed this way for about 3 weeks. Thursday I fueled up at a busy gas station in a populated area and on Friday night it came on again. Saturday morning I crawled under and drained the water separator again and yes I did find some water in there. I have driven about 60 miles and the light has not returned. I was wondering is this because of the fill up I just got or is this something I should be doing every 3 weeks? how often do you guys see your light come on?

From what I've read, it depends on a few factors (what part of the country you're from, where you get your fuel, if you use a fuel additive with a demulsifier, etc.). I drain mine everytime I change my oil (3x per year) but I've never seen any water come out at all, nor have I ever had the WIF light come on. I've heard of guys that drain theirs once a month, twice a year, and guys who say they never drain it.

jokester00 is right. Pretty much a personal preferance, but in your case I would do it every couple of weeks till you don't see any water. And for sure buy your fuel somewhere else.

Thanks for the response guys!! I am going to avoid that station from this point on and try something else. im honestly going to change that cover soon once i get some other projects done. i used the sensor to drain the WIF area because the screw threads seemed damaged last time i had it open and its hard to turn.. its not leaking at this point so im not in too big of a hurry to swap that out. honestly i probably will do it next month when im done rebuilding the front end. ( Ujoints- auto locking hub- vacuum pump-all new seals and gaskets in hub and knuckle- ball joint- and then alignment) this rebuild has costed me about 400 bucks so i need to come up with more cash for that.... I do have a fuel filter on the way from rock auto (motorcraft brand) so that will be in this week sometime.... thanks again for the help guys!

I hear ya about the $$'s! When you do pull the plug on the cover (see what I did there... :D), make sure you get the updated WIF drain plug. Much easier to deal with and less prone to stripping out. You can easily find it from one of the sponsors on here.

Jokester... I looked into an upgraded HFCM drain plug and i like what i see. from what i found there are 2 types, a Allen style with a stopper behind it and then a standard hex style you could use a socket or a wrench... what style do you guys use?
