So I suspect that you may be hunting for some lost miles per gallon, or perhaps have noticed sluggish performance from your 7.3 Powerstroke. I am going to walk you through locating and cleaning the FPR Screen.

The FPR is designed to maintain the fuel pressure in the cylinder heads at 40 psi. In addition ensuring that the return restrictor doesn't get clogged with grit. It is my understanding that the oring failing and clogging the screen is a myth and rather is gunk from the tank. O-rings are responsible for clogging your spool valve in your FPR, however.

Between step 2 and 3 it is essential that you have a telescoping magnet handy to catch the screen if it falls into the valley (area below the bowl). Mine fell in during install and removal and I retrieved it both times.

Step 3:

Once you have access to the screen you will find this (most likely)

which is the fpr screen covered in a layer of debris.

I have found write ups that suggest using a qtip to clean it, but based upon how tightly packed the gunk was it would be ineffective. When you have the screen out soak it in some break cleaner for roughly 5 minutes. I then scrapped off what I could and then shot it clean with brake cleaner.

Reinstall is simply reverse of removal. I found it helpful on the reinstall to have a screwdriver in my right hand to pry the fpr away from the bowl, use a pair of needle nose to stick the screen in the housing, and then have a screw driver in my left to push it in a bit more.

For the o ring I found it helpful to again pry the fpr away from the fuel bowl and then stick it over the end of a screw driver. I used my finger to block the oring until I got it on the housing it rests on, and then slid it forward. Pushed the housing back into its location and ensured that the oring doesn't get pinched.

As always I declare no responsibility or liability in you breaking something while following my guide.

hmmm maybe thats why my trucks fuel mileage is a little low.... ill have to give that a try4

a mod should put this in a sticky. awesome info. thank you

I haven't noted an MPG increase I'm getting 12 and I reckon this tank will be the same or less. But that is partially because prior to this mod I noted it cutting out and after this mod (not a mod I guess but don't know what to call it, service procedure I guess). While I noted this cutting out I was running some damn high boost trying to haul *** and get home. After this mod I was running a few 25+ psi runs to see if its fixed or if I had another issue going on. This mod was done the day after this started occuring and it cured it. I've also been idling a lot so I suspect that also hurts my mileage quite a bit. After this mod I too noticed a more pep in the step of the truck, in that I am guessing less fuel is required to maintain the same psi in the injectors.

None the less this service is a must do.

Yeah, I don't know if the winter blend is stronger there or if it just affects PSDs more, but I haven't ever noticed a drop of more than 1 mpg with winter fuel in any of my Dodges. Shouldn't these trucks be getting 14-15 mpg or better? That is just based on what I've read on here. I wouldn't think winter fuel would drop mpg's 3-4 points:dunno:

#11 ·
According to people I've talked to they said it drops easily 3-5 points. It is a combination of things however idle times/startup energy, etc. I was shocked at my first fill up of getting 12mpgs, I hope it returns in summer to about 15-16 or so.

I suspect it affects psds more because of the injector setup but that is just a guess. I don't really hear dodge guys complaining all that much about winter fuel they are getting about 15 or so even with winter fuel. I was tempted to look at the mpg gauge on my bosses 05 cummins just to see what he was getting but I didn't.

I lost that screen years ago!

So pulled that apart just now. Pretty simple. glad I didnt drain the bowl.....the screen was pretty well stuck to the fpr and rather then fight it or ef it up i just blasted it with brake cleaner...she was pretty gunked up. Going to take her for a spin down to the barn now and see what it see....god i hope i just squeaked a couple mpg's by doing that....

edit: Just took her out for a spin down to the barn and she pretty much feels like a entirely new rig. The throttle response is much better and im sure i just bought myself a couple MPG's just by the feel of it. Sweet

Did mine today couldn't believe the crap that was on it it was a mound of stuff lol all clean now

thanks for the part numbers. but is my pressures going to change due to not having it?

Yeah I don't have Ford book or I would verify those were located in some searching so one of those ought to do you right. All the FPR does is ensure that pressure is maintained in the cylinder heads, and it allows excess to bleed off. So basically what you see in your tank is crap from your tank (some say its injector orings), but it is my understanding it mostly is crap that was either growing in your tank or pieces of something in your tank.
What that screen does is to protect a spool valve in your fpr. Based on what is found on the screen I wouldn't want that to go into your spool valve which could clog and not allow pressure to bleed off. I don't want to get into more than that as I don't know for certain and don't want to steer you wrong, as to what exactly that would do. I filled up the other day and got 15 mpg including quite a bit of 4x4 driving and idling, I am expecting this fpr helped as initial fill was 12 with hubs locked, second was 13.48, hubs unlocked fpr cleaned (lots of 20+psi boost testing though), last was just general driving and some hubs locked (perhaps I didn't fill it full also, but I know 15 is a pretty good number for these trucks.

So my opinion, check out those parts I listed and install that screen. In the future its 15 minutes of work your first time, and then 5-7 minutes after you figure it out and don't drop the screen in the valley as I did twice. :D

IH built these motors with an FPR screen for a reason.

Best mod yet! Well I guess its not really a mod, just a fix, but wow. Mine had, no joking, an 1/8th inch of black "stuff" on it. I blasted it with brake clean and reinstalled it. It idles much better now. I haven't driven it yet but I can assure you it has to run better. Free revs clean and smooth now. Under an hour including working at 7am with it being 30 degrees out. Cold started much better. I can't express what kind of difference it made. 190K, never cleaned.

Glad to see that I am giving back a little bit here. I've been doing a lot of taking and I'm not a mech (hell still don't know for sure how to do drum brakes. :( I'm assuming they aren't hard, but they work good now and don't want to mess anything up.) But, I research a lot and try stuff out so if it helped just one person it made my pics and information scouring worth it. I noted the same benefits, and perhaps mpg of 5+ mpg increase too, although hubs l v ul, boost testing, and not filling tank full although it shows full are culprits. This last time I did use 4x4 a lot and my first fill prior to fpr clean was 12 with hubs locked no 4x4, I then noticed surging so I cleaned my fpr and left hubs locked got 13.48 with many 20+ boost runs, this last time I got 15 mpg, with quite a bit of idling, and some good 4x4 driving.

ETA:
Something I have heard that works great, is to fill your fuel filter bowl with seafoam as well as your tanks. I've not done this, except for a strong dose in my tanks, but I am meaning to try it with the gallon of seafoam I got (funny thing is gallon pricing is supposed to reduce it per pint, well after I ran the math I paid like $8 per pint which is the same as buying them indiivudally, was a bit mad about that.)
I didn't have any smoke with my seafoam but I am going to try the fuel filter too as people don't like to maintain a diesel for some reason.

Note: Do not, ever use Seafoam or really any engine cleaner in your crankcase aka oil fill hole. This is more than likely bad news and I do not reccomend it, if you try it I have no liability.

I had fuel gauge on one of my tanks quit working, it worked fine on the other , I put in one can of seafoam in each tank full of fuel and in about 25 miles if fixed the gauge.I also had the fuel gauge problem in my Corvette and the Seafoam fixed that probelm also.Good stuff

lost mine in the valley when i tried to do it. the part nu,bers help a ton, but where should i look for a new one? or will it hurt anything to run the truck without it?

Just search the part numbers I gave you. Also check with Tousley ford online(tousleyfordparts.com) , and search for "eds ford parts" www.partsguyed.com. Those are pretty cheap for Ford factory parts.

It could perhaps result in the spool valve in your fpr getting clogged (if the stuff found on the screen is any indicator as to what flows in that system). Which could result in too much or not enough pressure in your cylinder heads. I'd personally replace it.

bump to top

99+ has e fuel so pretty much only obs will this work on, but you may have a regulater yet to try it out on

I would love to post pics but this d@#& Autoguide doesn't work.

I found the two screens in the mixing chamber on the fuel pickup completely blocked with fuel tank lining/sealer and rust. I had the tank repaired by a radiator shop and simply cleaned the screens. The fuel pump is quiet now and the old girl (02 450) runs smooth.

I kinda wish I had done the Hutch mod and ditched the mixing chamber. Maybe on the next one.

Thanks for the OBS info and sorry to post non OBS findings here.

given this thread a little bump because it'd such a good easy thing to do.

I just chipped the crew cab and it didn't feel like it woke up much but now It feels like there's more power and it even smokes a bit now too
