Fuel mileage

Newbie here. Just bought my first diesel truck in April 2024. Its a 2017 F250 6.7L, SRW, with 72k miles, 6 sp trans, a 3.55 rear end, 18 OEM rims with Michellin tires and the truck is stock. When I purchased it, the first thing I did was change the fuel filter (OEM), water separator (OEM) and cleaned the air filter in the cold air return. I add Hotshots EDT each time I fill up. I get approximately 14.8 mpg around town and 9-10 mpg pulling our 6500# travel trailer in tow haul. If I tow it without tow haul on, I get 12-13 mpg. These numbers are all based on the computer. When i hand calculate, it is a little less (not huge). Does that seem normal? Is there anything else I can change to improve mileage? I see guys on other forums boasting better MPG, so I am trying to figure out if they are full of $hit or if there is something else I can do to increase MPG. Not a big issue, just curious. I love my truck!

They're full of it - those numbers are normal. I get the same, or slightly worse, around town, and about the same when towing travel-trailers and construction office trailers on the highway. The best ways to improve MPG is to just drive slower and keep your tires aired-up. I'd also try cleaning your MAF sensor; if it gets clogged it will impact your MPG, but based on your numbers, I don't think you have that issue (still a good idea to keep it clean).

15-18 (anywhere in there) could be considered normal for mostly highway driving to and from work, depending on driving habits. Mine has always been 17-18ish (didnt really pickup much after the dpf fell off) and goes up a little on long drives. Keep the tires aired up, frequently inspect your brakes (especially the rears if you live in the rust belt) and keep the pins greased, manually actuate your hubs every couple weeks, grease any greaseable spinny parts.... The typical maintenance (that everyone seems to forget about these days) items...

If everything is in good working order the only thing that's gonna murder your fuel economy is frequent regens. Using these trucks as grocery getters and for short trips will cost you, the more time you spend with oil, coolant, and trans up to temp the higher your fuel economy will be. And don't idle it....

In all honesty, 15mpg is on the lower side if you aren't flying around at 85mph and keep a constant speed on the freeway. Cruising at 70-75 its pretty normal to hit 17.5-18 (doing the math at the pump) during the summer. Winter I'm usually around 14. Deleting gained me maybe 1mpg, if that... The biggest savings came from not having to stay on the freeway because the truck decided to regen 5 min from my offramp lol.

Hello Flyfshn and welcome to the forum from N.E. Indiana! I use Archoil at every fill up. Around town 16-17 mpg. On highway 21-22 mpg. Pulling our 9,000 # 5th wheel 11.5-12 mpg. Now my 2016 F350 is a RWD and 3:31 gears. I also stay at 65mph when pulling 5th wheel. I keep front tire pressure at 65-70 psi, rears at 80psi and trailer tires at 80psi. Hope this helps.
