Any Colorado experts here? I'm looking at a 97 PSD. It will be coming from out of state, and a state where E-test isn't done. So what do I need to look for to pass Colorado emissions? I think it is stock, but may have had some exhaust work done, although I don't know what was done until I see it in person. Any tips? Thanks.

97's are smog exempt.

That just tells you that I must be tested, not what to expect from the test. So can a modified vehicle pass? What mods would still pass? what ones would not pass. For example, if the EGR were removed, would it still pass? How about a chip, or programmer, or whatever. But doesn't matter too much at the moment, the seller decided not to sell after the deal was struck.

Correct Mike.

I have flanges on my Cat and just bolt it up for testing and then remove it when I'm done. I also set the truck back to stock. I know of a couple people that have passed with a tune on, but I never wanted to hassle with the chance of not passing.

They WILL look for emissions equipment. If someone's truck is supposed to have an EGR system, they will pop the hood and look for it.

I live in Loveland and have a fairly modified '96 7.3. I have 4" exhaust with a hollow cat in my exhaust for visual inspection. As long as I reconnect my CCV to the intake and turn it down to the stock tune (I have bigger injectors so it can be a little smokey in the hotter tunes), it passes with flying colors.

the things Colorado looks for is opacity of the exhaust(black smoke), and a visual inspection of the engine and exhaust.

and the only emissions a 97 might have is a cat(no egr, etc etc)(my 02 dosent have a cat from the factory but my neighbors 99 does)

and if it is required in your county be ready to e-test it once a year(i think its bs gas gets 2 years).

also if you are real worried about passing ook for a place that does diesel emissions that also doubles as a tuner retailer, they MIGHT be a little less lenient.

If your diesel is 10 yrs or older than you have to do it every year, otherwise it's every two years.

What about the driveby places on the onramps. Do diesels qualify with those? I make a point of driving all the cars by them several times a couple months before they are do with the gassers. then I don't have to visit envirohosed. Seems like most of the people I have dealt with there wouldn't know a radiator from a porcupine.

No they don't qualify, you have to take it in and have it tested. Those things on the on-ramps can't test opacity.
