Best undercoating to use for rust protection?

I'm moving back to NY soon, and my underbody is MINT. I want to preserve it. I have used this rustoleum stuff in the past, but thats for pre-existing rust where it neutralizes it and turns it into a hard surface.

I've heard to use rhino lining, I've heard oil (I'm not using oil.. I want something that I can apply, is tough, and lasts a long time), rubber underbody lining, por 15, and a few other things.

Which is the best in terms of being tough and lasting?

I'll be rhino lining my bed, bed rails, and about 6" along the whole side of the truck including cab corners for starters.

KBS Coatings is the best I have found.

I've heard great things about por 15 and plan to paint my frame with it.

Whats up with kbs? Never heard of that one.

What kind of material is por 15? Is it basically a primer or what?

Fluid Film.

Did that ghost scare you that much to make you move? Just kidding. :icon_ford:

lol chump.

What is fluid film??

i used the permatex that my local oreilys sells. My frame and under body was in mint as well so i just needed a good covering

whats permatex? is it a rubbery surface or primer or what?

From fluid-film.com

"Fluid Film penetrates to the base metal, remaining active and migrating to inaccessible areas. Provides long term protection from the corrosive effects of salts, calcium chloride, moisture and fertilizers, resulting in a "no drip" application which will protect vehicle's undercoating from metal deterioration."
Fluid Film is formulated from specially processed wool-wax, highly refined petroleum oils and selected agents to provide corrosion control, penetration, metal wetting and water displacement. These long lasting products contain no solvents, will not dry out and will penetrate to the base of all metals, providing corrosion protection from both natural and industrial atmospheres. Heavily corroded and/or frozen parts such as nuts, bolts, shafts, etc. that would normally be damaged during maintenance, can be salvaged by applying Fluid Film.

Ya I was trying to stay away from chemical compounds like that. I was hoping for something "solid state".

yea its kinda rubbery. we used to use it to coat welds when we put flatbeds on at my old job.. here is some info on it

Thats def. about what I'm looking for. My underbody is so clean I'm thinking I'm gonna grab some rustoleum rust proof primer in a piss can, lather the underbody in that, wait a few days, then maybe pick some of that permatex up.

How many cans of permatex undercoating would it take to do my entire underbody, plus pumpkin and oil pan and maybe a few other things?

i used about 6-7 cans and all i did was from the frame rails to the pinch welds. i did not do in between the frame rails.

I just really did where the tires will throw mud, snow, ice, salt, sand and whatever else the truck may come into contact with.

h-word sh*t... 6-7 cans?? Was it thick enough to jump on like a trampoline?

#15 ·
I would go with KBS paints. Never used it but it seems to be really good stuff from what I have seen in person.

#16 ·
i did do it pretty thick lol... it may have not been that many, i really dont remember but i also did behind my ranchhands. i forgot to mention that in the post i did eariler as well as in the wheel wells. im gonna do the rest of the under side of the truck when i get the time. The permatex also acts as a sound dampener and you can tell a difference when you do it too. i know i noticed it.

they cheap and effective?

as far as the permatex, I think thats what I'm doing on top of the basecoat of some sort of rust proofing primer or something.. maybe some silver bullet or por 15. I'm doing the underbody, frame, gas tank, oil pan, suspension pieces, and wheel wells. Pretty much everything. This permatex will make it a cinch to spray the underbody down when dirty/salty also.

The permatex undecoating is rubberized, so yes it is sound deadening also. There isn't really prep work I dont believe, just make sure it's clean (loose dirty, grime, oils etc are gone) and give it ample time to dry. I think O'Reillys or Napa or places like that would carry it.

I have used POR15 for years, but now all I use is KBS!!! Everyone I have told about it has switched from POR as well. They don't get the fame but it is a better product!!

Is that right? I just looked into it, seems like decent stuff. Goes much cheaper than por 15 as well. Thanks man :thumb:

Wow, good thread to stumble on. Just got my '99 (Looks like yours, Black over gold) with a clean belly... gotta keep her that way.
Being in idiana, hell yes you do! Better get started on it before the salt/sand/calcium hits the roads!

Thats why i did mine. Im from louisiana but im working in Wisconsin till December and i didnt want the snow and whatever else im gonna run into up here get all under my truck and possibly make it rust later on down the road. These trucks ought to come with something like this already on them.
