Beat a dead horse.....fan stator on or off and why?

I have to warranty my BPD water pump since it is leaking at the 6 'clock freeze plug at 3 years (WTF) so today I had to confirm it was the pump since you cannot see anything with that fan stator, I left it off for now and kept the main fan shroud in place.

I have always been an advocate of air flow and OEM shrouds, but this thing is a PITA to work around, and frankly do anything in there.

I removed it since I have to get back in there and R&R the pump when it gets warrantied.....but I am considering leaving it off permanently and I don't have a visctronic fan or wiring with the 7.3 HD clutch.

I use my rig to tow heavy occasionally and am wanting some opinions.

Thanks for the time

Thanks for the reply......do you tow at all?

I just realized that the stator also holds the ac condenser deflector (rounded plastic shroud), I am trying to wrap my head around what the stator actually does as it inhibits air flow into the engine, but diverts it outward through the directional fins:unsure: into the engine bay.

I didn't notice any difference in temps after losing the stator, towing or otherwise. Granted, I didn't tow all that heavy and not up mountains, but cooling wasn't an issue with 8-10k.

A conversation point across many forums.

Mine has been off for a very long time. The only time I've noticed any temp change is in really cold weather where the EOT is lower after I took it off. No data, but I think it's there as part of emissions to keep the winter ETC up by blocking airflow over the engine directly.

Mine's been off for 6 years now. I don't have to fight that POS and I can get to things on the front of the engine if I need to. Oh and zip, zero, nada, NO problems.

HAHA Sounds good all of you. From what I read there are mixed reviews and at this point I am leaving it off.

It is a PITA to do anything with the stator in place! I really wish the OEM fan shroud was deeper at the bottom but it is what it is.

we had a forum member do some pretty elaborate test with the stator
and I actually did what I could reading technical documents about WTH a stator is and does lol

it really has some benefits , specially controlling air bounce back but the test our member did conclude that the
benefits may only be noticed at the upper end of extreme cooling , towing ,hills etc

it is the only actual test I have ever seen, and he used ducting and fans to perform the test

my takeaway was I tend to hit those extremes, so I put that stator back on
most people will never miss it ;-)

Any links to that Zmann? I tried to search but came up empty.

A few years back I tried to search for any patent on it but came up empty. Most items I found related to stators, they were placed in from of the fan to keep the airflow linear.

I have hit those extremes a few times and I will say that even with the BPD system and 7.3 fan I turned off the AC and still hit some good ECT's for a bit. For now I will leave it off and see what happens with my temps.

I look in the engine bay without it on and think....man it looks weird LOL:p

I mainly kept mine off because I was flipping alternators around like crazy and without the kickstand it was so much easier to engage the tensioner. And of course to reseat the drive belt if it became misplaced.

@TooManyToys I'm pretty sure @ZMANN is referencing some tests that @djmaguire did if that helps in your search. I could be wrong though.

Thanks, I tried searching with his name tonight. Being a 6.0 original owner and active on probably 5 diesel forums over the time, I've been in stator discussions it seems like forever. Searching, there was one on this site 3 years ago I was in. Doing the deep search, there were members who thought it was a bad idea, and now they have it removed.

I think I've learned my lesson, stay out of "stator" threads........

😆

At the firehouse we don't discuss, politics, religion or stators....cardinal rule.

Post 8 refers to the testing If I had time I could search for Term3's post with pictures, but he gives a good synopsis of the results Anyone running without a fan stator?

A 20% reduction in air flow should translate into hotter temps when towing, an easier identification than adding 18ft of ducting. Has anyone seen that change?

WOW! This is really awesome of BPD.

I will call today...thank you Andrew.

I talked to Andrew over at BPD and a new water pump is on it's way.

So awesome to have companies that care about their reputation and customers.
