Battery Recommendations

I have a 2005 6.0 and am curious what batteries you all are running in your diesel. I searched the forum and was surprised to not find this being a topic (maybe I searched poorly?).

My stock batteries made it about 4 years and i replaced them with optima red tops. I was originally disappointed with how much smaller the new batteries were but ultimately abandoned this concern as they lasted for over six years. Needless to say I ordered two more anticipating similar longevity but have since been disappointed in the fact that my current set has lasted less than 3 years. They started giving me problems at about the 2 year mark and I have been nursing them along for the past 6 months or so. The batteries currently will not start the truck if it has sat for more than one day regardless of being on a charger or not.

I am looking at the interstate MTZ-65 and am curious if anyone has any experience with these or the odyssey 65? I have never heard of the odyssey before but the CCA looks good and I am curious what most others experiences are with these or other batteries.

I am currently waiting to see what amazon is willing to do about the early death of my batteries. If they send me two new optimas then I will be putting new optimas in, but in the event they do nothing, or refund me some money, I am curious what route others have had success with as I do not see myself putting anymore optimas in this truck.

Thank you.

Same here for my '05. I just replaced both batteries last year with 2 of the Interstates from Costco.

I've used Motorcraft and CAT batteries and never got more than 30 months out of a set. I upgraded to a 270A alternator 39 months ago with a voltage regulator suitable for AGM batteries and got 36 months out of a CAT set. About 15 months ago I purchased a set of X2 Premium AGM batteries. The price is up there but I've got power to spare. I'm hoping for much improved longevity as well.

@Larry Grogan

Your newest set of Optima batteries only lasted a disappointing 3 years because Optima sold their company and moved the factory from Denver, Colorado area to Mexico. They are using recycled lead in the batteries now.

In the effort to gain more profits, the new company is destroying the Optima name the original company made for itself. The batteries are useless now.

You get what you pay for.

You may also want to do a parasitic drain test, to make sure the truck itself isn't contributing to the death of these batteries.

Cheap batteries very well could be more cost effective than the expensive ones. That said, I like reliability and wouldn't want to "settle" for a 2 year life cycle. Also, the 7.3L is not nearly as demanding for good voltage as the 6.0L. On the 6.0L, you probably can get away w/ weak batteries for awhile if you have had your FICM upgraded, but a stock FICM won't last long if it doesn't have good voltage all the time.

For quite awhile I bought Motorcraft batteries because the original ones I got w/ my trucks lasted very well. Then I learned that the replacement batteries you buy from a Ford dealership were not the same quality as the ones that the truck was equipped with from the factory.

You can't beat the Odyssey batteries or the X2Power IMO, but you had better get them on sale ... lol!

I've been using a pair of Duralast Platinum batteries in mine for almost 2 years now. Zero issues in all types of weather from 110 degrees to -20 as recently as last week. Often times I believe people run into corroded/loose terminals/connections and assume it is a battery. I wouldn't hesitate recommending the Duralast Platinum batteries. Also, with an Autozone on every corner, if I do run into an issue I can get a replacement quickly. Just my two cents.

They should all be pretty close. I think there are only 4 battery manufacturers in the US market. JCI, Exide, East Penn (?) and Enersys. If you count Yuasa then 5, but they only do powersport batteries.
You may want to check your electrical system or charging system. I cant think of a battery that has not passed 5 years for me.

I have 7 years and 47k miles on my 2017 Powerstroke with dual OEM batteries in the truck when I bought it new.

Sulfites form on the plates and when they build up on two adjacent plates and touch the battery shorts out and is toast. Key point: they can only build up during discharge. Under some conditions a de-sulfation charge may be able to reduce sulfation.

The same battery may have a vastly longer or shorter life depending on on how it is used and maintained so the thought of which brand or model is best based on how long they last, especially based on someone else's experience who uses them differently may be looking at the situation incorrectly.

When possible keeping batteries on a trickle charger may help extend their life for years.
