So the previous owner had broken or cut the top of the antenna off so it is even with the roof. The wire around the antenna is loose and unraveling. ... also the paint is flaking off so badly I was going to replace it. Do most just put another oem one or is there any luck with those short stubby antennas. But not the one that looks like a rifle cartridge
 
Short antennas will affect reception. If you’re cool with a taller OEM style then that’s what I’d go for. That’s if you still listen to terrestrial radio. If not then a shorter, non-bullet, will suffice.

IMO you should stick with a stock height antenna; mine is a great indicator for when I'm getting too skinny under a tree branch, or in a parking garage... If you go stubby, your new indicator will be the roof of your cab!

I get zero reception out of my bullet antenna...5-10 miles max FM. AM forget about it, which really peeves me.

It does look good though.
