Alarm Going Off, Driving Me Crazy

Hi All,

I have a 2014 F350 with a factory anti theft alarm that keeps going off randomly. All of my doors are properly shut and my hood is shut too so I don't know whats going on. I will lock the truck with the key fob and then confirm that its locked and the horn beeps once. Sometimes it will beep twice when confirming that the alarm is activated and that seems to be the problem. I believe when the horn beeps twice it thinks there is a door or hood open and then the alarm seems to go off 5-10 minutes later. Sometimes even when the horn only beeps once, its like it will then enter the mode as if it thinks the doors or hood is open by itself. Anybody have any insight or have the same issue?? Do I have a bad door or hood sensor? It is an intermittent issue and I have a feeling the stealership isn't going to find anything wrong or be able to recreate it when they actually take the time to look at it. I am in a very wet climate right now too and it only seems to do this when I visit where my parents live where its constantly raining most days....

Cheers, Cam.

Wonders of your PATS module is having problems. Think best to go to dealer and have them check it.

Yeah I'm thinking so. I saw online to that the Ford dealer can diagnose and scan to see if a door or hood sensor is going off and which exact one too. I hate to take it to the local joke of a dealer but I might not have a choice haha.

Well for anyone that has a similar issue, it's the hood switch shorting out. Dealer said its a fairly common issue and apparently covered under my powertrain warranty haha. It's nice to know that my alarm isn't going to go off randomly at 3am anymore....

Amazing. Hood latch is covered by power train but not the essential emissions components to run the stock engine.... Then again, they'd lose a lot more money replacing DPFs and EGR components than a small sensor...

Right on, yeah they scanned it and it says it's dead in the water... Good to know if anyone else has this problem though!

My 15 is currently having this issue. Since this fall I've been getting a "ding" inside while driving but by the time I would look at my dash it was gone. Could never catch it fast enough.

Then Columbus Day weekend, my alarm goes off at 3am in the campground that I was at. Ohhh boy I don't think anyone was happy with me. What is worse was I left my keys locked in the truck LOL... so I couldn't shut it off quickly. This happened again a 2nd time but fortunately in the day time.

About a week ago I'm bringing my daughter to school and sure enough, the damn ding came up but this time the warning stayed on the dash for about 15 seconds.

This is what I saw....

and now makes sense on why my alarm was randomly going off. It has happened twice in my driveway randomly as well. Time to bring it in to have it looked at because my door is fully closed.

Yup, I had 2 faulty latches on my 15 at different times. Replaced and all was good.

Holy crap mine is starting to do this in middle of night. Checked security cams and no one is around, no cats or squirrels. Has happened once during the day as well. Is there anyway to diagnose which sensor is causing it without taking to stealership? I have a launch scan tool but didnt see any errors or any sort of PATS diagnosis. Batteries check out fine. Removed battery from key fob as well to see if it was defective but didnt help. Disconnected hood latch sensor and tested with continuity meter and it seems to be working correctly.
HELP my neighbors are going to kill my truck lol

Well its 5 am and for the past 2 hours my F350 King Ranch has been doing my head in. It has sat parked and locked for 10hrs and suddenly my alarm goes off at 3am and I’m out the door with my GSD and Glock into the -10 degree night (Idaho).
At least I have an idea of what it probably is now thanks to this thread and several thousand other results on the web for this same problem.

This is my first Ford ever, I’ve always driven Chevrolets and Land Rovers and I have encountered more bizarre problems in the six months of owning this truck than I ever have with over 35 years of multiple models of the other two.

My Ford is a beautiful truck and it has a great interior and a lot of power but dear God do they make these things cheap.

After $2500 fixing the death wobble I had never heard about until I bought this Ford (Ford guys keep that a big secret!) I was hoping that was the last of the money pit.

Of those of you that posted on this thread several years ago, how many times have you gone through this? How often do you have to replace all four latches and sensors on a crew cab? Oh yeah, and the hood? I have a 93 and a 98 Land Rover, both came with factory alarm systems, both are four-door and both have been through hell and back off road and never once have I been awakened by my alarm going off for no reason.

Now I know it’s best to leave it unlocked with nothing valuable inside if I’m ever at a campground!

Door switches going bad really isn’t that uncommon regardless of brand. Has happened to me before and have seen plenty of others with the same issue in a previous professional life. Any truck with a solid axle is prone to death wobble, I wouldn’t say it’s a “Ford secret”, more of a “diesel secret” (though I wouldn’t call it a secret as it’s probably one of the top 3 most common ailments).

I had to chime in and say thanks for the info. I have a 2013 6.7 and the alarm would not stop going off at random. I ripped out the aftermarket alarm and everything before I came across this post. Turns out it was the hood latch. I only have 84k miles on the truck so looks like this is a normal problem for them. Not a wear and tear type. Thanks again

If you had an aftermarket alarm then you could have diagnosed it in 5 seconds by the number of chirps that the alarm sounded when you disarmed it after an "event". For instance, a normal disarm is 2 chirps. If you alarm has been set off at some point while armed due to a door opening, it would disarm with 3 chirps, if it was set off due to impact, it would be 4 chirps at disarm, if it was a secondary switch (such as a dedicated hood pin), then it would have been 5 chirps. Guessing that your alarm was installed no later than late 2012, you most likely had this feature unless it was truly a bottom of the barrel dollar store alarm. Unfortunate the whole alarm got ripped out for nothing.

The OEM Ford alarm has a similar function where if you arm the alarm with a door/hood open it will chirp twice instead of once. This is how you know that the truck is seeing an open door or hood circuit.

My f350 had this problem. I drenched the door locks with electrical cleaner spray and opened and shut them about a dozen times.
Then changed the key fob batteries and disconnected the starter battery positive lead overnight. It went off when I reconnected the pos lead but stopped when the fob button was pushed. Its been good ever since, about a week.
