Air Filter recommendations?

Hello all.
I've had mixed experience with K&N Filters.
On past performance cars I've seen 1-3 hp gains from just the drop in K&N Filter when on a dyno swapping between runs on the same day with a stock clean filter.
I've also seen on some vehicles I've had that they did nothing. On my Hellcat, I actually saw a 2 hp drop on the average of several runs (with proper cool down in between) compared to the stock paper filter.

I do not want to substitute particulate filtration for slightly better breathing either.
But figure if it's time to change out the stock filter, and there is an aftermarket that works just as good in the filtering department but flows a bit better too, well then might as well go with it.

So what do you all recommend in your experience with the 6.7 PowerStroke.

Input on a CAI system would be appreciated too, is it worth it on these trucks?

CAI is sold to make money. There's no real gains to be had on a stock truck. Sticking with OEM filters would be best.

Now when you are going all in on mods....that's a different conversation. I run a huge open element filter sitting in the engine bay with no issues.

Does my filter setup suck in hot air?? Yes, sitting still in traffic it sure does...with absolutely ZERO effect on the motor......once over 15 MPH that "hot air" goes away....it's all ambient air after that. Not to mention......how hot is the air going into the turbo when outside ambient air temp is 90*F+.........Your CAI is sucking in...wait for it...90*F+ air .
Then consider the coolant to air Charge Air Cooler (CAC) used on the 6.7L......guess what the coolant temp is that circulates thru the CAC core......Well the tstat that controls the coolant flow opens at 113*F........So while you are driving the turbo PSI drives the temps of the compressed air going into the CAC. My experiences and data from the CTS2 and CTS3 show that holding 5 Lbs or more boost PSI for sustained periods will cause the CAC out temps to run up to that 113*F limit (if we can call it that) easily. The tstat opens, does it's thing flowing coolant, the CAC does it's thing, the secondary radiator does it's thing....the cooling cycle works. CAC Temps out to the manifold are going to be 113*F...... give or take depending on the boost PSI. Can CAC outlet temps be lower than 113*F....Yes most certainly....Hold that boost PSI below 5lbs....in 90*F+ air temps, you will see temps under 113*F. So when you hook up a heavy trailer or any load that has your truck working with boost PSI over 5lbs you can bet that CAI is doing ZERO for you to make sure "cold air" is getting to the motor.

As I mentioned above, that’s what I’m running and I seem to get in the upper range of what I see people getting mpg wise. My take is it certainly can’t be hurting anything and if it helps the turbo breath a little better then great. I’ve never owned a turbo care that didn’t at least see a small gain from a freer flowing intake. As a side note, my IAT’s (intake air temperatures) are typically equal to ambient unless I’ve been sitting stopped for some time.

Of course they won’t be. This was regarding the intake air temp. All it’s saying is that, in most conditions, you will be starting with air which is at the ambient temperature and not heat soaked from the engine bay. You are obviously going to see higher temps after that air is compressed and passed through a whole piping system, figured that went without saying. I never bothered monitoring temps on my OEM intake but my temps leaving the intercooler range from 20F to 40F above what the IAT is under normal driving conditions (not towing).


Oh, meant to ask those with the S&B intake.
Do you hear more diesel or intake noise with the S&B CAI?
If you do it’s very little, maybe just a hair more sound but it’s very minor. If you want to hear the turbo whistle you will need to “reconfigure” the exhaust.

I won't do AFE.
When they first released a CAI for the Hellcat's I got one for my Hellcat.
They were claiming like 30 hp increase.
I did all kinds of testing on it with my VBOX and it literally did NOTHING. In fact it did slightly worse on every acceleration test I did except 8 speed rolling test from 60-120 mph in which in was a minor amount quicker.
But every other gear or test I did, it was the same or slightly worse than the stock intake. Did all the testing same day, same road, many many times on each.
We had 2-3 others do dyno tests as well and guess what...nothing.
Bottom line is the stock box on the Hellcats flow as much air as they need for 700+ hp easy.
But it left a bad taste in my mouth for AFE for claiming such big power increases with just their overpriced CAI.
