Welcome to the org!

Generally speaking without getting to deep its an IPR issue. (but don't start buying parts, it leads to headaches and a thin wallet) But you really need to get a monitor to read some vital sensor reading. These trucks need a minimum value from the ICP sensor and IPR when running. I.E. if the IPR starts to stick open it lets the high pressure oil pump pressure bleed off causing it to die, and not start.

The fuel tank is another source of issues-Are you by any chance close to 1/4 tank when this happens or does it do it regardless?
Was there any work done recently i.e. last few months?
Any mods to the engine, programmer/chip, electrical add ons?
Any codes, service engine soon, check engine light?

by mitchell icp and ipr numbers are on the money when it shuts off, also notice that when shuts off the cluster goes dead, comes right back on along with glow plug light....as if the key has been cycled to off then to on...but it hasnt

I work at a shop and asking on behalf of my tech working on this, Im just looking for answers...Let me get this to him, and get back with you with a response...fuel tank i know is good, filter was changed...icp ....cps all replaced. Grabbing tech now..BRB

This is not so related but the fuel bowl heater is connected to the power source of the PCM so when the fuel bowl heater shorts it kills the ecm. I would unplug the wire connector on the back of the fuel bowl and replace the fuel bowl heater fuse.

Also Im wondering if there is an IDM specific code. Most scanners wont pick it up and it does not show a CEL most times. If you have a laptop grab a usb to OBDII adapter and download the free program forscan. It works very well on powerstroke diesels and is worth its weight in gold and is FREE.

If the fuel bowl heater has a short it kills power to the ecm. Unplug it and replace the fuse and leave it unplugged. If it does not die more then simply leave it unpugged. Its not needed and only causes issues. If it still randomly dies then there is something fuel related or what I personally suspect a wire/mechanical issue with the IPR or a soft code that needs to checked relating to the IDM

Mystery truck --- year and model sure would be helpful - and required for useful information

ForScan troubleshooting software -- PC version
or a Snap-On scanner

ICP sensor voltage, the pressure reading can be inferred, so not accurate without voltage to back the reading up

I suggest downloading ForScan and using the OBDLink MX+ or the BAFX adapter
Torque Pro would be good for everyday use

the "free" license is all that is needed

Would be nice if you posted the numbers
Post (before it starts and also during the long crank):
ICP pressure
ICP volts
ICP desired
IPR duty cycle
Cranking rpm
Fuel (injector) pulse width

POSTING NUMBERS,

FIRST SET WILL BE -
Key. On. Engine. Off. (KOEO)

SECOND SET WILL BE -
Key. On. Engine. Running (KOER)

ICP pressure *0 *650psi
ICP volts *.22 *1.10
ICP desired *do not pid
IPR duty cycle *15% *14% (long crank *35%)
CRANKING RPM
FUEL INJECTOR PULSE WIDTH *5.34 *2.47

FICM M-Power *THIS VEHICLE HAS IDM
FICM L-Power *THIS VEHICLE HAS IDM
FICM V-Power *THIS VEHICLE HAS IDM
Sync (FICM and Cam/Crank) *THIS VEHICLE HAS IDM

MAP *14 *14
BARO
EGP *14.9% BOTH WAYS

Yeah, that was a cut-n-paste from my 6.0 tips, I forgot to delete the FICM stuff

Your numbers look "about right"
are you not seeing RPM when cranking?

Dies like the key was turned off or in some other fashion?
Starts back up immediately or needs to sit a while?
Must be driving to make the truck fail?

I agree Justin
was leading in that direction, but information on this problem is still kinda vague
finally 14 posts in there is a little info

You are probably correct in thinking it is an electrical problem
connections and components heat up and if there is a loose connection it can break because of the thermal expansion

finding this break can be a headache, as you well know

if the failure can be repeated, it makes troubleshooting much easier
I would look at supply voltages for the PCM and IDM -- get a meter on those and watch it as the failure occurs
ForScan should be able to monitor some of the voltages from the PCM

if supply voltages are good, then may need to consider more expensive parts

Also the back side of the fuse box under the hood can get corroded

GOOD MORNING TECH IS TESTING AND CHECKING ALL LISTED...BE BACK WITH RESULTS...THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

okay, with EEC relay and IDM power relay bypassed and every other relay removed except starter relay the truck starts runs for short time and then something in fuse panel makes clicking noise or clicks then motor shuts down. after motor shuts down the fuel pump still running and then you get another click from panel and then fuel pump stops running. *****remember relays are bypassed so seems to be why i say something in panel clicking.....and goooo lol

#25 ·
Clicking relays is most often about Low Power that's unable to keep the relay properly "latched". This would certainly cause the engine to stop if it were something like the IDM, PCM, or Fuel Pump relay.

Did you look at the link I posted in post #22? That started with a clicking IDM relay...

OKAY WE HAVE DONE EVERYTHING, REPLACED IPR...CHECKED ALL AND EVERY WIRE IN COMING FROM FUSE PANEL WHICH IS UNDER DASH TO LEFT OF STEERING...OIL AND FILTER, HEATING ELEMENT FUSE/CIRCUIT THAT WAS SUGGESTED. UNPLUGGED CHECKED OVER...WE HAVE REPLACED CAMSHAFT POS SENSOR...ONE FROM OREILLYS THEN ONE FROM DEALER (NEWEST) REPLACED ICP SENSOR, THAT WAS LEAKING OIL. WE EVEN HAVE A BRAND NEW ECM. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK...ANY KIND OF INPUT WILL HELP TREMNDOUSLY
