7.3 fuel economy

In the 9+yrs I've had my truck, the best I noticed was 18.5 mpg. This was typically from highway driving @ 65 to 75mph where I could set the cruise control. Since Monday I've been driving all 2 lane highway miles (40 to 55), and was shocked to calculate 20.1mpg over 232 miles (and I checked to be sure the tank was topped off).

Just curious as to what the rest of you see from your 7.3's?
Mine's a stock 2002 CCSB, 4x4, 4R100, 3.55 diffs, regular use of DieselKleene.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

My '01 is a CCLB, Auto, 4X4, 3.73 Diffs. Only mods are K&N CAI, 4" MBRP Turbo-back exhaust & a Hypertech Power Programmer 3 set on Stage 2.

Usually, running the freeway @ 65-70mph, cruise on, I average 16-17 mpg. The best I've ever gotten was 19.2 mpg. That was driving through Oregon on Highway 97 when the speed limit was 55. (Has since been raised to 65 between towns). I'm pretty sure the lower speeds allow for better mpg, given the truck isn't working that hard w/less wind resistance.

Did you swap to 3.55s? I don't think that was a factory option on 7.3 Superduties.

I'm only getting 11.5 lol.

2.5" lift, 35.5x13 trail grapplers, 20x10 wheels, KC turbo, 4" exhaust, intake, new international injectors, hydra set between stock, 65 and 100, 3.73 gears.

It's mostly my driving style though. Every stop sign is boosted launched and WOT for most of my highway runs. 4" straight pipe is honestly the worst mod I have ever bought. I can't keep my foot off the floor as it sounds too damn good.

Highest I've gotten with my new injectors was 14.5 on a 40 mile drive but then I got bored.

You can't believe the meter, hand calculated is the only accurate way to get mpg.

Other things to consider even with a diesel engine, especially at higher highway speeds.

Bigger - wider off road tires, especially mud terrain, have a much higher drag coefficient. Equaling lower fuel mileage

Lift kits have more parts hanging down to catch air under the truck

Toppers or hard top tonneau covers can aid in fuel mileage. But racks and gear on the roof take mileage away.

Wow. You guys make me jealous. I'm getting 13-15 mpg, sometimes dropping to 11 mpg. Current set up is an S&B intake, a 5" tube into a Donaldson muffler, TS 6 position chip. F250, 4wd, and I try and stay off the skinny petal.

I'm thinking about a Hydra. I've heard good things. Anybody have a comment on the mileage difference if there is one?

Important to keep in mind, that this time of year, Winter Blend fuel is diluted with Kerosene and there's a bit less energy in Kero. So, pretty much everybody see a drop in mileage with it.

Also, and I hate to say it, but there's really not much we can do about it (other than making sure everything's right tire pressure/filter & exhaust/free rolling brakes). Spending money to improve mileage never gets repaid I think. No tuning or engine components are going to overcome the trucks weight - displacement - aerodynamics ;)
