Does your accessories shut off as well? Could be hpop leak do you have a monitor? What did you use to read the codes, some readers do not pickup all the codes. Do you have an egr cooler and valve?

its completely stock other than an egr delete, exhaust and air intake. accessories stay on. i loose power steering and power brakes. i can usually put it in neutral and restart it.

i took it to one of the shops in town and they used their reader that reads codes when the check engine light doesn't come on

 

You need to monitor your icp and ficm voltage, you can pickup a scangauge at advanced auto for less than $200. Either it is the alternator, battery, ficm, high pressure oil leak, or a wire issue. The only options that makes sense is a hpop leak or ficm is starting to go, IMO. You need to monitor vital readings in order to properly isolate the problem.

cool thanks. ill take it in tomorrow and have them re scan it. and test my ficm. i replaced that and both batteries when it first started doing this. it stopped doing it as much but would still turn off. and I'm picking a tuner for it tomorrow as well.

 

Sounds like you are on the right track. How about fuel filters? Would not hurt to have them check your fuel pressure as well, just a suggestion. Keep us posted.

What does your RPM'S do? If engine shuts off while driving the engine will still be turning over giving you an rpm reading. My 6.0 had similar problem engine would just die while driving and it was random but truck would restart with no problems no codes. Ended up being the crank position sensor. It's located on passenger side of engine and a PITA to remove but it is possible to remove without pulling the A/C compressor. May be the cam position sensor but when mine went out i had a no start situation with no codes.

 

my rpms will drop to zero. i just changed my fuel filters, and put a new fuel pump on before winter started.

redneckyankee. how did you find out it was your crank position sensor? would your rpms drop as well?

 

OP yes the RPM'S dropped instantly a couple of times the needle would jump back up for a second or so then drop back to zero. Even when. I got home and put it on my AE scan tool I couldn't get it to fault on me. But when I unplugged it the RPM'S would go away tried it with the cam position sensor and would still show RPM'S due the signal is coming from the crank.

so i took it in to get scanned today. and it finally threw a very vague code. it was for the ficm loosing communication but it wasn't a specific code. they said it could be a bad ficm, wiring problem, or the cam or crank sensor going out. they want to keep it for a day and see if they can make it do it again with a scanner hooked up to it.

 

As red neck said I would be looking at your crank position sensor. Also inspect the wiring on the sensor. They chafe on the early models especially if the wire has come loose and is not clipped to the motor anymore. I have had several 03-04's with this issue. If the wiring is ok then replace the crank sensor.

This will be hard to see and pinpoint unless you have a good scan tool and can watch to see if the crank sensor drops, but most of the time it is the crank sensor.
