6.0 EGR Delete, need to tune?

I have a 2006 F-250 6.0, I recently deleted my EGR Cooler (did not remove the EGR valve) in which after I scanned the truck and there were no codes as far as I've seen regarding the EGR system. But the truck ran like ****. Is it 100" necessary to get a tune? Or could this be adjusted on its own and driven without a tune?

If the tune is required, what tuner would be the best option?? I've looked into BullyDog and SCT. Not sure which model or tuner is the best. This is my first diesel, first 6.0, first Ford.

Modified the EGR by welding both ends and reinstalled it. Please help!!!

Truck is currently at my mechanics shop for him to check it out for leaks. My next question would be while I was driving it, (after EGR delete) turbo was maxing out at 15 PSI and then I hear a loud BOOM. PSI dropped to 0 and did not go up after at all. Hence why I dropped it off to check it out. Any speculations?

If you leave the valve plugged in it won't trigger. I ran my '07 like that until it was in an accident. No EGR cooler with the valve in and no CEL. My '06 was all deleted and needed to be tuned out.

Likewise with my '04. I know that is not supposed to occur but it does under certain conditions. Sometimes weeks between CEL's. I just reset with my scan gauge until the next time. I have the ability to do a tune but have resisted since it runs like a champ, and gets 17 MPG around town with 23-24 on the highway. if it ain't broke...

Before I write my update I just wanna say thank you in advance to everyone who's responded to my post. It's been nice having yall be extremely kind and helpful with these issues I'm having with my 6.0. I genuinely appreciate it.

I removed the turbo and cleaned it entirely. Reinstalled it and connected everything back together and I started getting about 8psi max when driving. Still hear a loud air leak noise which I believe is that stupid y pipe again. It's a real bbtch to get in properly. I'm going to be heading to a diesel mechanic today to see if they can get that in properly which will hopefully have it running without that arrogant air hissing.

My only concern now is that my regular mechanic was really getting my brain juices pumping when he mentioned that deleting the EGR (welded both ends) that I do require a tune or I risk serious damage. Everywhere I've researched says otherwise and just mentioned the CEL being triggered. Just wanted to know for sure that by welding both ends of my EGR cooler, reinstalling it, and keeping the EGR valve still on, that I won't risk any damage of either overheating or damaging anything (turbo, motor, intake, etc) Reponses are greatly appreciated! I'm really happy I joined this forum. Been a rough first go at it with a 6.0 or even just a diesel in general. Thanks!!!

You shouldn't be causing any damage without tuning the truck without the EGR. As I was corrected above (Thanks @jman37), if you leave the valve plugged in you should be ok. Your mechanic could be thinking it operates the same as the newer diesels which won't run without tuning.

Update: I just brought my truck to my buddy who's very good with tedious work. He's going to help place the y-pipe clamp on properly and that should be the end of these issues for me. (As far as EGR goes) I did order an SCT tuner. Wondering if anyone knows the best way to get the custom tune for the EGR delete. Any websites? Sellers? I know that after doing research these new tuners don't come with the option for EGR. Thanks.

If it is new and has the latest software on it getting it for delete is totally useless. It no longer has that function and as far as I know the tuners can't write it in there either. It is essentially useless to you concerning your delete.

Well since you've got the sct coming you should have some fun with it. I would suggest not using the sct "canned" tunes (the tunes pre-installed on the device) I learned the hard way and my transmission payed the price, I had to replace it.
After you get it contact Gearhead and get you like a 3 tune package. You will be happy and your truck will run the best it ever has. Be prepared to do a head gasket arp stud job, that is the weakness of the 6.0, it has a hard time holding it together stock so +10%, +20-30%, you get the picture.

Nothing like putting a shop name in the wide open for all to see about an EGR delete tune.(n)

I didn't say a damn word about no egr delete tune.
You just did.
Imo gearhead builds the best tunes for overall long-term use. His trans tunes are what I prefer and they have great customer service.
It wouldn't matter if the man's egr was deleted or not the tune would be the same.

Kbnw15 just posted this before me:

And so...

The title of this thread is "6.0 EGR Delete," you mention a shop name. Put 2 and 2 together.

Understand?

We're all on the same team, guys.

I spoke with Gearhead about this when the hammer started to drop on all of the shops a couple of years back. They said, and I quote:

We have never offered tunes that remove emissions equipment - most end-users used their older devices that had legacy EGR removal capabilities in the tuner.
Regardless of how someone's post on here was interpreted - doesn't matter. They don't defeat EPA equipment with their tunes.

I have owned my 04 since new. Deleted the coolers when the studs were done with 110k on the clock. It’s never had a tuner on it. Still have the valve in & is currently at 210k. It has never thrown a code or CE light in connection with egr.
