295/65/20 vs 35/12.50/20

I'm installing a 2 1/2" Top Gun Customz front/rear kit on my truck and I can't decide between these two sizes. Which would you choose and why? The tires I'm going with are Trail Grapplers.

For me the choice was simple. First, the 35x12.50s don't have the needed load capacity for my cabover camper. If you use your truck as a truck you will find the 35 x 12.50s don't have the weight capacity. They also don't take 80 psi, which means increased sway when towing/hauling. Second, most 12.50" wide tires are not rated to go on the the OEM 20" wheels (too wide of tire on too narrow of a rim). Third, the 295s are a bit taller and better fill out the fender wells on my leveled truck.

Thanks for the reply and those are all good points. Another thing I am thinking about is the rubbing. In order for me to get into my garage I have to turn lock to lock and I've read the 12.50s will rub the radius arms which is not something I really want to deal with.

Thanks for the reply. Are those Open Country AT2s? I've been looking at them a lot the past couple days. How is the ride and can you tell any difference as far as power loss?

yeah they are toyo at 2s, they ride very well i do a lot of driving on the interstate so far they have been wearing good to,as of loss of power i don't think so i wouldn't know what the power difference is i only had my stock tires for about 60 miles, as soon i bought my truck i took it the next day to get all that done

Thanks for the replies. I'm ordering the AT2s in 295/65/20. I also decided on the Carli leveling kit with rear blocks for now. Maybe I'll upgrade to the mini packs in the future. Can't wait to get it all on!

Just wanted to say make sure you check the load ratings for the tires. I recently was looking at new tires, and was thinking of going to a 295 65 20 instead of the stock 275, and the 295 had a lower load rating, about 600-700lbs, and another rating that was also lowered, whereas the 35 was 300lbs more than stock.

What tire were you looking at that had a lower load rating in 295/65/20 than in 275/65/20? I have never seen a tire in 295/65/20 that isn't a 4,080 lb load capacity (load index 129), whereas 275/65/20s have a load capacity of 3,750 (load index 126). No flotation size tire in a 20" wheel diameter has a load index of 129 (or greater).

I was mistaken, the tire I was talking about (Goodyear Duratrac) doesn't come in that size, but the 285 60 20 & 305 55 20 both have significantly lower load ratings and the overall size is smaller than the 275.

Yep, makes sense. No worries!

The 20" OEM wheel is +44 offset and from what I've read a 295/65/20 AT tire barely clears at full lock. I wouldn't go below a +18 unless you plan on doing a leveling kit, and even at that you might rub. I don't have any personal experience as my F-250 is fairly new and tiring shopping myself, but I've researched quite a few threads. Hope this helps

I thought that + offset pulled the tire in farther? wouldn't an offset lower then +18 push the tire out farther creating more clearance? or am i backwards?

I also did alot of research and went with the 295/60/20 for the same reason. I did choose to go with the Nitto for the extra half inch of height. I also like the fact that the 295/60 doesn't stick out as much as the 35/12.5/20's. the 295 really is a perfect fit for a truck with a leveling kit to fill out the wheel wells, and still have the tire rating needed to tow or haul anything substantial.

No rubbing issues at all and it could have been fine without the leveling kit. I chose to add a ProComp leveling kit anyway and I raised the rear of the truck with factory F350 Blocks and U bolts which are about 1 3/4 taller than the factory F-250 blocks because I did not want the truck to be exactly level or slightly higher in the front so I could keep a slight rake forward.

So will the 295/65/20 on a factory 20" KR fit under the truck fine with no lift kit? Also how much wider and taller are these than the stock tire?

#35 ·
I will likely look at the Toyo. basically they should be about 1" taller and 1" wider. I think i should be able to clear that without a lift. i dont want to mess with a leveling kit.

I'm running 295/65/20 on a stock 14 F350.

The only time it rubs is at full lock and flexing just right. For instance full lock to do a U turn on flat ground doesn't rub at all. Full lock pulling into my driveway with a small incline rubs very slightly.
