I'd like to upgrade my stock headlights to something brighter. What do you recommend? Thanks in advance for your time!

The stock assemblies aren’t designed for HiD bulbs you’ll have bad results. There’s not much you can do on the stock assemblies other that silver star bulbs which are better but only marginally. The cheap aftermarket assy with hid or led usually have poor optics. Best bet is fresh assemblies if yours are cloudy and a good bulb.

Naw. With my stock assembly, the hids looked great, no "splashing" or anything. I tried leds in the stock assembly and those looked terrible. Hid bulbs, actually, work just like incandescent bulbs (light wise). The use the diffuser and reflector the same way an incandescent bulb does. They're just "more powerful". Now, throw those same hids into a projector lense and you get some serious distance of light throw.
I've had more problems with led bulbs than hid. (I have dual bulb housings) I only use led bulbs in my high beams, because of the "instant on" capability that hids can't do.
With stock housings, the "hi/lo" hids don't get brighter, the bulb actually moves to change the light pattern (hids don't need to be brighter), so, in stock housings, the "bright switch" or the "flash to pass" work fine....but, the "flash to pass" doesn't work (or work well) if the headlights aren't on already.... Hids can't "turn on" instantly, they have to warm up, so "flash to pass" does not work with the headlights off.
Still can't beat hids for night visibility. The 8k color doesn't blind oncoming traffic and cuts through fog great.

I'm building the new recon assembly with Morimoto HID's. Morimoto are some of the best lamp/ballast/wiring assemblies out there, awesome customer service and have a great warranty. I've had a few surgeries lately due to cancer so I've not completed but will add pics here in a few days. I went with 5k bulbs as they are true white and will match my rigid fog lights in color. Good luck to you!

I have nothing but praise for my Morimoto LED's. I did a retrofit conversion and mounted the projectors in to my stock lenses. There is a mechanical cutoff shield that is in the down position on low beam so oncoming drivers don't get blinded, then it flips up when on high beam allowing full light output from the projector. It was kind of spendy in my case, around 500 bucks, as I had the lenses engraved and put in the matching fog lights. It took me a day to do all the work and I actually prefer the output and sharp cutoff over HID, as well as the instant on. I will admit I could use without their silly "M" logo, but you can't see it from the driver's seat so WTH. As far as light output, I can say that stock halogens literally look like flashlights in comparison and I couldd never even drive the speed limit when it rained with them. The pure white 6K color of the LED's makes everything visible. I got them because I live in BFE and see deer almost daily and figured eventually the 500 I spent would balance out not having to use my 500 dollar insurance deductible when I eventually hit one because I couldn't see it.

WOW!

These are what I put in my '06 Lariat -- it had some cheap LED in there and the output was all wonky
the Morimoto 2 Srtoke V3 works well with the stock housings
possibly will look into projectors in the future, but for now the LED is working great

Perfect, thank you for the link!

I have had excellent luck with the AUXITO 9007 LED Headlight Kit off of Ebay for about $30. They made all the difference in my 2004's night vision. As others have noted the after market LED's don't really like the stock sleeve's but the Auxito's can be persuaded to fit into them with a slight modification. I have been running the LED's for a year now with no issues. They do light up the night.

Hydro - Can I ask about your Morimoto 2Stroke v3 LED’s? I installed the same lamps in my ‘05 Excursion in Feb. ‘21. My flash to pass doesn’t work. High beams work but no flash to pass. When I reinstall stock lamps, flash to pass works. Did you install a resistor? Thx

Everything works as it is supposed to work -- not sure why you would have flash to pass problems -- unless you have a wiring problem in the harness connector
Does this affect both headlights ? and do normal bulbs work properly -- still need to have someone watch the headlights as you flash them and check bright and dim

I did have to "clock" the bulbs as they were turned a little from vertical and throw a much better pattern now
I first installed into the original headlights, that had bad lenses and did not notice the bad pattern
Getting new Ford headlights showed the pattern problem, but it was an easy fix

What orientation did you clock them for best results? I'm about to ditch my projector retrofits and go with 2strokes. Yes, I know it's an old thread :)

Do you have the daytime running lights option on your EX ?

The only thing that happens with flash to pass, is both high and low beam are turned on at the same time -- I think checking the grounds for voltage loss may be the answer
You could rig up a test off the truck using a battery and jumpers to simulate the operation, just to verify the bulbs

Don't remember the exact position that I finally used, but made a big difference in the light pattern
I parked about 30 feet from my storage building and then turned each light to the "best" position
really hard to get my big mitts in to the light, but was possible

I was about to go back to the halogen lights -- the PO had some LED bulbs in there that threw a really bad pattern
the 2strokes were better, but still was not satisfied
I was considering retro fitting to projectors

I got new light housings from Ford thinking that may help, since the lenses were a little foggy
then read about possibly needing to clock the bulbs, ...what a difference that made
I would have thought the bulbs would have came already clocked, but no

They throw a nice pattern now , with a distinct cut line when on dim
keeps people from flashing me when we meet on the road
