Ok can anyone give me a idea how the best way to relieve tension and remove the belt tensioner mine now needs to be replaced?

It's pretty tight in there, I'd remove the air deflector on rh top of shroud first. this can be done using a hose removal tool to release the snaps while applying a steady upward pressure. you can use a 1/2" drive breaker bar to remove the belt, there is a 1/2" sq. drive on the tensioner, pull belt off alternator pulley, remove two bolts from tensioner, 8mm bolt heads. not much room at all between the fan assy. so not a fun job the first time. reverse order to re-install. torque tensioner bolts to 18 ft/lb

Don't you be tellin' everybody that! That's a secret!

If you're a big ******* like me you can use your left arm to pull the belt, and slide your right arm down in there (kinda hard on the arms if they're any sort of size, or you gots the Popeye forearms) and push that little tin tab up in there to hold the tensioner arm in place. To release it, give the belt a yank, and listen for the little 'clink' that is the tab flipping back down to it's original position.

And for the record, they's 10mm bolts, not 8.

Just finished changing the eleven foot long serpentine belt on 6.0. Tried all the good suggestions on this forum but none worked for me. I think I`m as dumb as a Ga. cypress stump. Bet I started over 6 or 8 times trying to find a route that worked and the belt would get hung each time I tried to start over. I didn`t remove shrouds or anything which now I realize was a mistake. I welded up a long skinny tool with a 1/2 square rod on the end for engaging the tensioner which worked fair in the very close space you have to work in to relieve the tension. Had to thread a clothes hanger down around pulleys to pull the belt where I wanted it to go. I called my local Ford Dealer for tips and he said they always pull the radiator and that makes it easy, no kidding, but with a labor charge of $450. No way will I pay that. Only took me 8 hrs to complete the job but look at all the money I saved. Now I know why they named it Power Stroke. Considering all the frustration and stress involved, I was lucky I didn`t have a "power stroke". These engines are for young folks, not 71 year old fools like me. Spark plugs for me from now on!
