Hello Forum,

I wouldn't post if i wasn't in a pinch. 84 year old grandparent is still farming and ranching with a 2000 f250 7.3l 3 hours away from me. Lately it is having a failure to start issue that is somewhat random. while out and about it would not start. a turn of the key will result in a single click of the starter relay and then nothing. I wiggled the battery cables and it fired right up. Back home it was fine, but i pulled the battery cables off, cleaned the posts, cleaned the corrosion off the cable ends and redid the connections once clean but with the same ends. truck started fine.

Today she calls and i can hear the relays clicking very loudly in the truck. truck wont start. she plays with it a second then it starts right up. It has a new starter, and with the relay noise, i don't believe it is the starter box under the steering column. Given winter is approaching, the level of corrosion in the cable on the passenger side, and that the ends are just destroyed, I want to replace/upgrade the battery cables.

I've done some research, not as much as i'd like to given the price, and would like to verify Custom Battery Cables are consensus route to go for cable upgrades. I upgraded the set on her 1997 6.5l and it made a world of difference. But at $350 i'd like a little reassurance. thanks in advance!

Custom makes really nice stuff, and you pay for it ofcourse ;) but,,,, the first thing I would think to replace would be the fender-mounted starter relay (pass side inner fenderwell). Have you done that yet?

I mean, if you need them / you need them, and remember that you're buying Two sets of cables & ends so it's Twice the cost. You could make them yourself if you had the right equipment, not sure how much you'd save though...

don't believe it's the starter relay due to hearing the various relays in the truck clicking over the phone. I think i wrote that confusing initially. It wasn't just the starter relay clicking i heard over the phone. it was all the relays under the dash. Any time i've seen/heard that happen it was due to too low a level of power to energize them correctly. thanks!

i believe $350 is for the total set. Battery Cables for Ford F250, F350 & Excursion with Diesel shows
  • Positive 2/0 battery to battery
  • Positive 3/0 battery to starter
  • Right and Left Negative Cables
  • 2 Positive and 2 Negative military style battery terminals
  • 4 Lock nuts
  • 10 gauge, 72" Start relay to starter wire.
  • 2 red and 2 black military style battery terminal covers
  • 2 sets of terminal protectors
  • Loom
  • 5 mountable and 5 normal zipties

$350 ought to take care of the problem, whatever it is…

Sometimes it's just easier to buy instead of make.

First you have to source quality parts and get your measurements.
Buy a good hydraulic crimper and or solder the cables into the ends,
Don't forget the appropriate colored and sized heat shrink.
It all adds up and is time consuming.

If I like what I'm buying and the labor isn't terrible, I'm happy to pay someone for their trouble.
On the 6.5's I made some of my stuff because I liked an on/off switch as opposed to what was offered on certain harnesses.
I also prefer mountable relay sockets as opposed to mountable relays. One extra part, but much easier to swap out a relay if need be.

Sounds a lot like a case of a rusty junction block on the driver fender

I think these PowerStroke forums are pretty free with information and the sharing thereof

Did you get any pics of the cables?
What size were they?
One of the first things I thought when I popped the hood at the dealership was "Typical junk undersized battery cables"
I"LL be looking for new cables for the 2016 eventually. I have the stuff here to make 3/0. But sometimes it's just easier and faster to buy. Not like I didn't buy the cable, crimpers and ends. I'm getting low on some ends, need to do inventory and place an order.

i also want to plug powermaster alternators. Another american business that has been fantastic help with a replacement on my 78 t/a. Will be watching the voltage across the 2 batteries now and kicking around getting one of their alternators if i have any issues from the corroded cables putting a strain on it.
