This may have been asked here before but the guys at my oil change place put motorcraft 10w-30 in my 6.7 the other day and I'm a little nervous if it is right oil or not. It didn't say super duty on the jug anywhere and it wasn't cj-4 either but the guys there told me this was oil they were putting in 6.7s coming through there. I think they even put 15 qts but am not sure and I park on side of street where truck is leaning so I don't get accurate check on dipstick. Isn't it supposed to use 13?

If you have your owners manual, I'd check that. If it were my truck, I would.be doing it by the book or not at all.... regardless of what the oil change shop says.

Yeah I think so too. May drain it tmrw and do it myself. See if oreillys has filter and oil I need. Manual says 13 qts so I'm afraid they overfilled it too

If you're in doubt then change it and use the correct oil stated in your owners manual. Better waste the oil than ruin your engine.

Motorcraft® SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil XO-10W30-QSD 12.3L (13 qt) with filter

Right out of the workshop manual.

I use a 15w40 but I think the book says 10w30. It also shows a few grades/weights. As long as it's for diesels [ cj4 i think ] then all is good.
I also changed mine the other day and found I overfilled. After filling I ran it a few minutes to circulate etc and checked the dipstick to find it reading proper. In the morning after everthing had settled I found I had about 3/4 quart too much. The nice thing about the oil drain plug on these is that it is easy to drain some out with no mess.

I've learned to not trust anyone working on my diesel, unless they are a specialized diesel mechanic. My local Ford dealer has even disappointed me when it comes to their lack of knowledge of our Powerstrokes. If it's something you can do yourself (I.E. oil changes, etc), I recommend doing it yourself just for the peace of mind.

Mine didn't have the 1/4 turn type drain plug like the one I saw on YouTube video. Guess the 12's have different one. I used rotella T6 and put in 13.5 qts. Seemed to b right on mark but will check it in few days when it's little more black.

It's not making oil, it's contamination in your oil. I would say it's diesel in your oil from the EGR.

How would diesel get in your oil from the EGR system?

It is from the regen process....

Your right, I was wrestling my 3 nephews when I typed that, don't know what I was thinking. Now I feel

The guys who changed the oil in your truck are fools. SAE 10W-30 Motorcraft SM/SN oil is hardly the right 10W-30. I've seen these types before. They also think the proper tire inflation pressure is whatever is on the sidewall. So if you have Load Range E tires on a 1/2 ton for whatever reason...you get 80psi. Better find some different people who actually know some things about the business they are in. These guys are hacks.

Yeah that's right. I drove a couple thousand miles with that oil in and hope it didn't hurt anything. Didn't seem to it still ran good and sounds same I will just do it myself or go someplace else from now on

I'll bet it doesn't say, nor imply, ANY 10W-30 oil.

I suspect it still should be diesel rated. And that is the point of the discussion.

There is a 10W-30 Superduty diesel oil, but not ALL 10W-30 is diesel rated.

If you read the OP, he states "It didn't say super duty on the jug anywhere and it wasn't cj-4"

:tard::tard::tard::tard: No it doesn't say ANY 10w-30. This is a diesel discussion on a diesel truck forum, didn't really think that I would have to state that my 2012 PSD needs "diesel" oil. I was just stating the fact that 10w-30 is recommended by Ford to be put into these trucks.

I completely understand that not all oil is diesel oil. I pay for Amsoil because I am so peculiar about my oil and I want the best protection possible circulating through my engine.

About the whole "the guys at my oil change place" thing. This why there are only 2 people that will ever change the oil in my truck, my buddy (who is the head diesel mechanic at my local dealership) and I.

Yeah I saw on the cap about 10-30 and the oil guys were telling me they had been putting it in all of em so I didn't worry much about it. But the more I thought about it the more I decided I needed to drain it and put in cj4 so I didn't risk screwing something up. I will b changing it myself from now on as well
