05 6.0 no start high icp numbers

Got a friend with a 05 6.0 and he's having no start problems. We checked ficm volts both koeo and cranking both at 48v. Unplugged the icp sensor and still nothing. He had a scan gauge and this is where it gets weird. Key on ipr is reading 14.5 but cranking it's hitting 86% and icp is reading 3600 psi. Once it's unplugged, icp stays at 1500psi. Does he have a bad ipr or a major hpop leak? Truck only has 117k miles and when it is cranking it smokes white like it's on fire.

Did you resolve this?

Truck does seem to be getting more than enough high pressure. When you unplug the ICP, the computer does an inferred reading and pretends the ICP reads what it thinks it should read instead of actual pressure, so the ICP is good.

Does the white smoke smell like fuel? I would start thinking something to do with the fuel system like a leaking injector because of the white smoke, but if it is continued cranking could fill a cylinder up enough to hydrolock it.

Could also be an EGR cooler. Watch this one:

Maybe I've got it wrong, but this doesn't seem at all normal to me.

The ICP sensor and IPR (acting as a dump valve for the HPOP output) form a feedback control loop. The IPR going to 86% says that the ICP is asking for more pressure causing the IPR to fully close (no dump). ...but 3600psi is too high to be commanding more pressure. Far too high.

I don't know what to make of it. But, normal? No.

...and - if I have it wrong - please point out the error.

Didn't mess with it today.

Didn't smell the white smoke.

Egr cooler is gone, coolant is still full so I don't think it's a head gasket.

Truck was running fine saturday, he went to start is Monday morning and wouldn't start that's what was happening.

He's working the rest of the week and we're gonna look at it again next monday.

I am leaning towards bad injector/s or even bad fuel.

Well got it figured out, ipr had stuff on the screen. Swapped it out and still didn't run numbers looked alot better. We had 1500 psi icp and 55% ipr.

During the key cycles we noticed we couldn't hear the fuel pump, turns out the fuel pump was bad, swapped the pump out and it's back up running.
