Nice job on the kit you made. I would probably do something similar if I had to do it again but I do like the setup of the Diesel Site kit though. Being able to visually see the amount of water sitting there is great. Here was my drain from last Thursday.

You can definitely see the water that it has collected sitting on the bottom.

Thank you for the write-up, OP. I love the custom idea and the price tag. I'm gonna build one next week.

For the post above concerned with contaminants in the fuel tank such as pepsi, def, water, whatever, get you a locking fuel cap from Napa, part number BK 7031770. It's like fifteen bucks and you KNOW nothing will get in your tank unless YOU have put it in. I've had one on my truck for years now, it's really not a hassle when fueling.

So, here's a question to anyone and the OP. Who knows how we can adapt a CAT fuel/water separator filter into the fuel system instead of a baldwin? are the spin on nipple sizes the same?

Here's a link to a place that makes the kits for cummins and duramax, and supposedly is working on a kit for the 6.7. Reasonably priced too. http://www.dieselfuelfilterkits.com/13_present_cummins_fuel_filter_kit.html

It may be overkill and the Baldwin may filter just as good, but I'll be honest, I kinda want a big honkin cat filter hanging under my truck. :)

Looks like this CAT filter will fit the Baldwin base (1-14 post)

175-2949: Fuel Water Separator

But it is only 90% emulsified spec, can't find the micron rating on the CAT site.

I want to add something like the kit the OP listed but for some reason I want one of these.

GOLDENROD 496-3/4 WATER-BLOCK FILTER (56591) Bowl Fuel Tank Filter with 3/4" NPT Top Cap https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AXE6C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DW4cBb6CRG3XD

Anyone see a reason why these wouldn’t work? The only issue I see is mounting the base as these are meant to be screwed into gravity and powered transfer tanks I believe.

It’s all in my head but I really want a clear bowl.

Why not add the clear bowl for the donaldson filter? Its only like 20 bucks and you reuse it when you change the filter. At least one person in the thread has it

100% free water, 90% emulsified, 10 micron on the 175-2949.

I don’t like the idea of putting a 2-3 micron filter before the DFCM. I believe the goldenrod is 17ish. I also like the idea of the clear bowl surrounding the filter element. As well as the idea that the filter will clog if too much water is introduced. I get all up in my head about stuff and most of the time it’s unreasonable.

When you first posted this I was gonna do it ASAP. Then we decided to sell our house and I’ve spent the last 6 weekends getting that ready. Now I have 95% of my tools in storage and wouldn’t be able to do this.

I really want to do something soon so I may just order the dieselsite filter and run higher micron elements in it. Making the above conversation about the golden rod filter completely moot 😂🙈

FINALLY! Installed my fuel filter/water separator kit today, once all the parts were here and I put it together the install on my truck only took 10min or so, I primed it 6 times while checking for leaks then took it for a hot lap and no leaks!, great write up with pics and directions, all in all I think I’m in it for $100(neighbor works at Napa and got the hose and high pressure clamps at his price!) still have to tie up the lines out of the way but happy with the outcome so far! thanks again Hawker25!

Uuugghh!! my neck! Think I pulled a muscle looking at the pics. :hehe:

Just did a 5,500 mile drain on both. Not a drop in either.

(I keep an eye on the Donaldson bowl between drain outs; probably every other fill up, I take a peek at it)
