Ok some time when i get out of high school and finish auto classes and my diesel
teck course i want to get a powerstroke what do you recommend i get?

Does anybody have any recommendation? i am leaning toward a nice 7.3L around 1999?
:dunno:
:(

PLEASE VOTE AND RECOMMEND TRUCKS OPEN TO DIFF YEARS

If you get a 7.3 then try to find a 2002 or early 03. They're more refined, just have a nicer look. The 7.3 is a great choice for sure. I'd go that, or a 6.7.

thanks for the input yeah that 6.7L sounds like a heck of an engine maybe by the time i get out of school 6.7L will be a bit cheaper

#5 ·
yea they'll be cheaper, and there will be way more feedback on them. Not to mention more aftermarket components.

#6 ·
more power  maybe i will buy both i love those 7.3L very reliable

#7 ·
very reliable indeed

One more vote on the 7.3! The last GREAT engine made by Navistar for Ford. Go with whatever year you want on it, but I'd steer clear of early 1999 due to the frankenstein type setup of it.

#9 ·
ok i do like the early 1997 style but hp are low i guess a few mods could help that

Appreciate all the input keep it coming

My vote was for the 6.0. Great engine, gobs of power, AND it still sounds like a diesel! :D

#75 ·
Me too.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#12 ·
What are somethings that go wrong with the 6.0? i heard you want to get the late model 6.0?

#14 ·
First, the oil cooler will plug, making the EGR cooler rupture sending coolant into the cylinders, and then popping the head gaskets.

Remedy: install coolant bypass filter to remove the casting sand and debris from the cooling system that clogs the oil cooler. Dieselsite is where I will be getting mine from

Go with an 05-07 MY

I dont know how many years you are talking about here but by the time you get out of school those old 7.3s might be pretty hard to find with less than 250k on them, they are already starting to get harder to find. Im not sure how long your talking about or your financial situation is but in a few years the 6.4 will be coming down in price and might be within reach. Wouldnt be a bad idea to check into one of those, they arent bulletproof but are still a good motor.

but there is always crate motors :) but with the 6.4 what are things to look for? things that go wrong?

I'm a 7.3 fan til the end, but from what I've heard, if you're going with a 6.0, go with a 2005 or newer. All the kinks were worked out by then.

What ever i get i really want a manual trans. that is the only problem i have with the 6.7l is it only comes in automatic trans with the option of the manual shifting put it still isn't a true manual

 i don't think so lol not bragging but that motor (390) if it was put up agaisnt a 6.0 (saying if everything was the same on the trucks and if the 6.0 wasn't chip) i could beat it see my horsepower is about 325 some where in there i think that is the same as the 6.0 but my horsepower kicks in at 2800 to where 6.0 kicks in at 3000 i don't have to wait for a turbo to kick in :bump: but i still support powerstroke power so i am not cutting anything down ok :thumb:

But if my engine were complete stock and wasn't the 4v or the 6v motor i would get raped by the 6.0

But if it was possible i would that would be sweet to have a 6.0 in and older truck i could turn some heads when i would pass them whistling (from the turbo)

Its possible, check out Wade's truck on PSN, username Power smoker. That's a badazz rig there :D. The 390 is a beast of an engine, keep that

My dad inherited 07 runs great it just has a squeak when idling some where up around the fan don't know if it is the fan clutch or a pulley i replaced the bearing on the one tensioner pully didn't stop the squeak :dunno: stop squeaking when you wrap it up in RPM's. gets up and moves tho

i have a 2000 7.3l with 181,xxx miles on it. my neighbor (the one we bought our 7.3l off off also) has an 04 6.0 and it sounds horrible, he replaced the turbo 2 times, and egr 3 and in first gear when started wont make it up a small hill even after a 30 min warm up. just sayin my 7.3l will run circles around it and i only repaced the cps once. the 6.0 only has 60,000 and i might be wrong its probaly less!!!! all im saying is 7.3l is a relable motor and the 6.0 the newer ones are ok but the old ones stay away from. as long as you stay with:icon_ford:

My dads 1997 has only had two problems on 169,000 the cam sensor went out and the glow plugs need replacements

exactly my point, 7.3l are beast:icon_ford:

totally agree just they are getting less and less of the 7.3 all the time :dunno:
