What's in a stock exhaust?

Am buying a 2003 F250 Supercrew 4wd (7.3L)and, although I know it has a straight exhaust with factory diameter pipe, I have to wonder. Did it have a catalytic convertor? I know it once had a muffler:thumb: It sounds good, but not loud. I guess I am OK driving around without the emissions stuff, but I want to know if I am "technically" illegal. Thanks,
Mike.

i think it depends on when and where your truck was manufactured.

Do you have the stock exhuast straight piped or is it aftermarket?

If its stock go look under it towards the front where a cat would be and see if it has a different pipe??

I think it's stock, I am in the process of buying it after one good test drive, a pretty detailed crawl around underneath, and a look at the airbox and turbo. The seller lives pretty far away so don't get to see it every day. Didn't think to look at the exhaust pipe, only occurred to me today to ask whether or not the truck came with one! I should have it by early next week, and then I'll get a little deeper.

From what I've seen when I was checking out the catalytic converter and legality was that some do, some don't. There seems to be no pattern for it. My 2001 CC LB delivered brand new to eastern washington came with a catalytic converter. I think that the only way to get pinched is if someone ran your VIN. That will say if it came with one or not.

So I guess the answer is you may get burned or you may not. Depends on how you get checked and where. If you got checked at the emissions testing facility, they may tell you to get it fixed before you get your emissions cert. If you're doing doughnuts in a mall parking lot on a friday night you'd probably get a ticket amongst other things.

Thanks, Hank,
I'm in Irmo, near Lake Murray. My first Powerstroke is waiting for me to pick it up Tuesday, a 2003 F250 crew cab FX4 Lariat. Wow, that's a mouthful. Anyway, looking forward to learning more about the truck and doing a few modest mods as time goes by.

As for the Cat. Some 7.3l's had them, and some didn't.

No need to be worrieded about it in SC i dont believe anyways:thumb::thumb:

Hey bud, :welcome1:to Powerstroke.org!!

As far as the cat goes.....some had em some didn't from the factory. Someone else should comment on the dates and pattern of which do and which don't. I have heard someone mention it on here a while back, I just don't remember what it is.

Now...I have been told...In order to find out if you had one from the factory or not, look at one of the stickers under the hood. One of them will say the word "catalytic" or "catalyst" on it some where if you had a cat on it from the factory. It will not mention either of those words if you never had a cat on it from the factory.

Like I said....That's what I have been told. It is true for mine. 02- I know it never had a cat, and it has no such words on the hood sticker.

As far as legality...if it had a cat on it, it's supposed to still have one. If it never had one, you're good, you don't need to install one.

So that I don't muddle up your thread with this, I am going to start a new thread to prove or disprove this theory. I am curious if it is really true or not.

:yikes:Yeah, I didn't think I had anything to worry about in SC. I have met Mike and his wife out at a small get together at the lake, and I'll let Steve tell you how he knows me! Thanks for the welcome!
I know Steve is getting down to the wiring for that set of horns hes got. It should be amazing.
BTW, I always thought something like that was needless overkill until this morning, coming home from work, some lady was sideways in the middle of the road, doing a lazy three point turn on a blind curve with a cell phone stuck to her ear. What I would have given for a set of train horns right then!!!:yikes:

No need for that, Steve is trying to get me to commit to the SSS...
I'd like to come but am trying to sort out several other outings that need a decision.
Yeah-Steve did show me this site.
