Almost ready for my first refill. I'll be using fords DEF. Was curious if anybody is running any other brands and Ect. A buddy has a new ram and uses the Walmart brand super tech. Seems a little sketchy to me but I'm new to this DEF and emissions stuff, coming from a 7.3

I haven't bought any yet as my truck hasn't arrived. But it's my understanding that provided the DEF meets ISO Standards 22241 and American Petroleum Institute (API) certified you'll be good to go and you can purchased based upon price. In other words, there is no "premium" or one better than another if they comply with 22241 and API. All about the $$.

There's a API standard. It's a blend of mostly water (demineralized) and the rest is urea. Both water and urea are VERY simple, nobody can make them "better".

Get one that passes API standard, spend as little as you can. I get it at a metered pump where I get diesel.

^^ Yup, all the same stuff.. just a matter of how much is purchased and what margin of profit the store wants.

I have 2 2.5 gallon jugs and fill them up at a truck stop and then use those to fill my truck with the Ford designed nozzle.

I saw that today when I got some def from the ford house and bought it!

On a side note, yall running any fuel additives? I was thinking to run it every other tank or so, curious as to what yall are using. In my 7.3 I was adding 2 stroke oil to every tank.

I use the Motorcraft PM22 cetane booster in the summer, and PM23 anti gel in the winter. I buy it by the gallon and refill the 20 oz. bottles, its cheaper that way.
If something goes wrong with the fuel system, Ford can't blame the additive as its their own and what they recommend. It would be harder to deny a warranty claim that way.

Ok fellas, am I doing something wrong, I had a 2012 F-450 that I used to fill up the DEF at the truck stop for 10 or 12,000 miles with no problem so when I traded on my 2017 350 I still use the truck stop, am I missing something, isn't all the DEF the same? For me it's convenience while I'm hauling my trailer to fill it up at the stop while filling diesel.

I fill my DEF tank at the local Maverik when I buy fuel. It's about $2.60-$2.70 at the pump and I always buy just the right amount with none left over..

I gave up the jugs a long time again. Just find a station that you like that dispenses it at the pump and buy it there.

RJC2,

It's a little bit of a drive up US220 for you, but they sell bulk DEF at the Loves Travel Center on I-68 on the east side of Cumberland MD. It is also available at the Pilot Travel Center east of Grantsville MD. Some Pacific Pride Commercial Fueling Centers permit the general public to make purchases at their sites utilizing regular credit cards. DEF was priced at less than $3.00 per gallon the last time I checked on their respective web sites.

Thanks Bligh. I had forgotten about the Love Station having DEF. Their diesel is priced so high that I never go there. Pilot is much the same on fuel prices, (I was by there this week) but it's still worth buying DEF there rather than the bottles.
Yesterday I priced the Walmart Super-Tech brand DEF and it was ~$6-$7 for 2.5 gallons. I'll probably just buy that from now on.

I'm too lazy to drive to a station that has DEF. Can get it on sale for $12 a 2.5 gallon box and call it a day. This way I can fill at home when doing routine service.

IF you get bad DEF then the DEF company would be responsible. There is one major manufacturer that makes it (Terra Environmental Technologies) and they make it for the majority of brands and just rebrand the package.

I refill my Ford containers using the DEF sold at a Sunoco station @ $2.29 a gallon.

Hey Guys, kind of new to this DEF topic as the last diesel I had was an 00 F-250 and never heard of DEF back then.

I just purchased a 2017 F-250 lariat FX4 and am awaiting delivery but have been reading up on the forums to try and pick up information about the new truck. i) What does DEF do for this 6.7 engine, ii) how large of capacity is the tank on the truck, iii) how often does one need to refill this DEF tank.

Yeah newbie questions.

Thanks

I have on 02 F250 as well as a new 2017. You'll love the improvements. Here's a Youtube video that can explain the DPF and DEF system to you better than I can.
Congrats on the new truck. It will take the better part of a month to get accustomed to all the gadgetry. It's been almost a year for me and I'm still getting used to it, but I'm slow, or so says my 12 year old daughter. :)

A guy I work with and this is from him.. His Duramax has a def related issue and was told if super tech def is used that they would void his warranty. I’m not going to try it out, it Peak Blue . Been debating on using Maverik as it is a bit better than buying jugs.

My buddy with a Dura max uses only dealer stuff cause he thinks this too. I couldn’t see ford denying warrenty over the def brand. Maybe I need to read the fine print. What a chicken versus egg deal. Only reason I keep def is to maintain warrenty. If they then said my def fluid is what then voided my warrenty they would get slapped, then sued. And I’d immediately tear the garbage tree huger liberal crap off truck. Win win

Catch Blue Def while on sale from one of those big box auto stores. Usually can get a buy 1 get the other 1/2 off and such which equates to like 11 bucks or less for 2.5 gallons.

Blue Def (and probably others) has a shelf life of 2 years provided it is stored between 12*F and 90*F. Keep it out of sunlight. So if you run across a good deal, then you can stock up.

I'd be careful buying Blue DEF at Walmart, or anywhere for that matter. Recently while buying a box for my truck, I noticed one box that was expired. My guess is that someone had returned it and they just restocked it not knowing (or caring) that it was expired.
