Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel .....

Just got a flyer via our fueling company.... rather concerned and hoping someone can shed some light....

The flyer states that by October 15, 2006, the EPA has mandated the ULSD be distributed by all retail and cardlock locations.

Also that the Diesel will be lowered to “15 PPM” vs. the “500 PPM” that is being used now.

In addition (this is the part that worries me), “the EPA states that they are not sure whether the transition to S15 in 2006 will affect fuel system elastomers.”

What types of things should we be thinking about???:help:

stockpile the "good" diesel? this iinda worries me to. are going to make our trucks thier lab rat's? what are they going to do if it realy beepbeepbeepbeeps my truck up? fix it? no. buy me a new one ? no. i think we'll be s.o.l.

the low sulpher fuel should help prevent some injector failures on some of the newer diesels....but im a little worried about the possible reduction in lubricity....thus taking away the gain in injector life due to not enough lubrication......at least on a mechanical side thats what i would expect.....Marc

Gee Marc can you be a LITTLE less honest next time - I'm not getting a warm fuzzy about this. Additives help at all?

i honestly dont know what the lubricity of the new fuel will be....they may be forced to put an additive in it to get it up....its tough to say....i was just kinda stating possible gains and losses.....i was not aware of the new fuel standard till i read the post....ill have to look into it a little

I heard about it a couple of weeks ago but thought the guy might have been mistaken......guess not.
i cant imagine since the big rigs will be forced to run the same fuel....that they would let the lubricity or cetane levels get too low....it could cripple our whole economy if big rigs were breaking down constantly due to fuel.....

but another thing i will be curious to see is with the higher refinement level.....what the price will do.......Marc

mark, i read an artile in Constructioneer magazine about ULSD for 2007...it doesn't look good...they said it provides much less lubrication, and makes a much less powerful explosion...i'd rather switch to bio...

wes
can you scan and email that article wes??

well, if thier runnin diesel with sulfer as low as i think ?5ppm? in europe, i might be a little more comfortable with it. but i still aint to sure about it.

There are going to be additives in the ULSD. There was talk about using B100, but the gas giants found a synthetic that was cheaper. I'll keep my B100 in the tank and not worry bout the new stuff.

I have heard a lot of talk this week about this ULSD and I too am worried about the lubrication properties. I wonder if the diesel will be cheaper which will probably not happen are if we have to use an additive at each fill up?
the refining costs will go up, which means im sure the cost will go up. also, the additive is going to be added when the fuel is put in the tank, which means that will probably also raise the cost, although it will save you from having to keep additive on hand for each fill up.......Marc

I was told that the additive they are putting in the ulsd is soy oil to bring up the lubricity, I dont know if that is true does anybody else hear of that.

I talked to a fuel rep from cenex an he said the price for the ulsd is expected to cost more at the pump also as far as lubricity, in Minnesota we have what we call a state law that says any diesel fuel sold regardless of type will and has to have 2% biodiesel in it. That 2% is suppose to make up for loss of the sulfer from lsd to ulsd and with the ulsd we would expect to change out the fuel filters more often as well as have some injector problems. Thanks to our EPA that we will be test subjects for their bull crap political agenda. Go under www.epa.gov to read the crap stats they have and www.clean-diesel.org to read more. Only time will tell and in the end it's all about MONEY!
